Chapter 8 - The Unraveling

Vanessa rushed onto the side of the stage, her composure entirely shattered.

"Daniel, please!" she cried, her voice high and desperate as she reached for my arm. "You don't understand! Adrian forced me! He threatened to cut me out of everything if I didn't go along with his plan! I love you, Daniel! I was just terrified!"

I didn't even turn to look at her.

"Marcus," I said into my lapel mic. "Play track one."

A loud click echoed through the ballroom speakers, followed by the crystalline audio recording captured from my hospital room three weeks ago:

“You expect me to spend my thirties pushing a wheelchair?” Vanessa’s voice blared across the room, crisp and damning.

“Vows don’t pay hospital bills.”

The crowd groaned in disgust. Vanessa covered her face with her hands, trembling as the recording continued to play:

“Daniel,” Adrian’s recorded voice whispered, “the board needs stable leadership. Investors can’t see you like this... Finished.”

Then came the distinct, wet sound of their kiss, followed by Adrian’s arrogant laugh: “You don’t have the money for a legal war. Your medical debt will bury you.”

Vanessa collapsed onto her knees on the stage, sobbing hysterically as five hundred of the city's most prominent citizens stared at her with open revulsion.

"That audio is fabricated!" Adrian screamed, pointing an accusing finger at me as his professional composure completely disintegrated. "It's an AI generation! He's using Vale Robotics technology to frame me!"

"Then explain this," the lead state police investigator said, stepping onto the stage and displaying a set of signed arrest warrants. "Adrian Cross, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and the attempted homicide of Daniel Vale."

The investigator held up a evidence bag containing the logistics manifest from Vanguard Capital, linking Adrian directly to the truck driver who had rammed my vehicle on the highway.

"No... no!" Adrian backed away, looking around frantically for an escape, but two state troopers grabbed his arms, forcing him down onto the stage floor and clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The room erupted into a frenzy of shouts and flashing lights.
