Chapter 10 - The Star of Hastings

Six months later.

The grand ballroom of the Hastings mansion was once again filled with light, music, and laughter. But tonight, the atmosphere was entirely different.

There were no arrogant heiresses carrying riding crops, no cruel whispers in the corners, and no invisible servants walking in terror. Tonight was the official launch of the Lily & Leo Johnson Pediatric Heart Foundation—a fifty-million-dollar charitable initiative created to fund emergency surgeries for low-income children across the country.

I stood near the grand marble staircase, dressed in a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown that draped softly over my shoulders. My dark hair was styled in soft waves, and on my left wrist, worn unhidden and proud, was a simple diamond bracelet that framed the star-shaped birthmark on my skin.

Beside me stood Leo, wearing a sharp little navy blue suit and a red bow tie, laughing as he showed Daniel a magic trick he had learned from one of his physical therapists.

"Look, Daniel! The coin vanished!" Leo chirped, opening his small hand to reveal an empty palm.

Daniel clapped dramatically, dropping to one knee to ruffle Leo’s hair. "Incredible! You're a wizard, buddy!"

I smiled, taking a sip of sparkling water from a crystal goblet.

"You look stunning, my dear," Eleanor said, rolling up in her gilded wheelchair, looking regal in a silver lace gown. "Your mother would be so immensely proud of the woman you've become."

"Thank you, Grandma," I whispered, leaning down to hug her gently.

Suddenly, Vance, the head of our security detail, stepped quietly up to Daniel’s side, leaning down to whisper into his ear. "Sir... Miss Lane is standing near the front gate outside."

Daniel’s smile faded slightly. "Victoria?"

"She was released from her holding facility yesterday under house arrest pending her sentencing next week," Vance reported softly. "She asked if she could speak to Miss Lily for two minutes. She says she just wants to apologize."

Daniel looked at me, his jaw setting. "I'll have security remove her from the property immediately—"

"No," I said softly, setting my glass down on a nearby tray. "I'll talk to her."

"Lily, you don't owe that woman anything," Daniel warned gently.

"I know," I replied, looking him in the eye. "That's why I'm not afraid of her anymore."

I walked down the grand entrance steps into the cool evening air.

Standing outside the massive iron gates of the estate, surrounded by two private security guards, was Victoria Lane.

She looked unrecognizable. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a messy bun, she wore no makeup, and her expensive designer clothes had been replaced by a simple grey coat and jeans. Her ankle carried a bulky black electronic monitoring device.

When she saw me walking toward the gate, framed by the warm golden light of the mansion, she froze.

"Amara... Lily..." Victoria stammered, her voice thin, trembling, completely stripped of the cruel arrogance that had defined her six months ago. "I... I wanted to..."

She couldn't finish the sentence. She looked down at my wrist, then down at her own hands, tears spilling over her pale cheeks.

"I came to ask for your forgiveness," Victoria whispered, her body trembling in the cold wind. "My father... he lied to me my whole life. He told me you were an imposter. I was so terrified of losing everything... losing Daniel... losing my status..."

I stood on the inside of the iron gate, looking at her with quiet, peaceful eyes. I felt no hatred, no desire for revenge, and no anger.

"I don't hate you, Victoria," I said calmly, my voice carrying clearly through the night air. "I felt sorry for you the night you struck me, and I feel sorry for you now."

Victoria blinked, stunned by my words. "You... you feel sorry for me?"

"You had all the wealth, beauty, and power in the world," I said softly, looking back toward the mansion where Leo’s laughter echoed through the open windows. "But you were so poor inside that you thought hurting a defenseless server would make you strong. You built your entire life on a foundation of cruel lies. And now you have to live with the truth."

Victoria bowed her head, sobbing quietly as her security guards gently escorted her back toward a waiting taxi.

I turned my back on the gate and walked back toward the warmth of the mansion.

As I stepped through the massive mahogany doors, Daniel was waiting for me, two glasses of cider in his hands. He handed me one, his emerald eyes shining with deep, quiet pride.

"Everything okay?" he asked softly.

I looked at him, then at Leo running across the ballroom with Eleanor, his heart beating strong and healthy, surrounded by love and safety.

I lifted my left wrist, letting the brilliant chandelier light catch the crimson star on my skin.

"Everything is perfect, Daniel," I smiled, clinking my glass against his. "I'm finally home."
