Chapter 8 - Storming the ICU

"Get your hands off that door!" Daniel’s voice echoed like thunder down the hospital corridor.
Arthur Lane spun around, his face turning pale as he saw Daniel Hastings sweeping down the hallway, flanked by four armed, uniformed Hastings security operators.
"Daniel!" Arthur stammered, attempting to put on a calm, professional facade. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private medical matter regarding an uninsured patient—"
"Shut your mouth, Arthur," Daniel said, stepping directly up to the older man, his chest inches from Arthur's face. "Your daughter already confessed to the entire operation on a recorded line."
Arthur’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "What?!"
I pushed past them, tearing open the door to room 412 and rushing to Leo’s bedside. I threw my arms around his tiny, fragile frame, careful not to press him against my bandaged back.
"Amara! Amara, those scary men said I had to go away!" Leo sobbed, burying his face into my neck. "They said you weren't coming back!"
"I'm here, baby. I'm right here," I wept, kissing his forehead, smoothing down his soft brown hair. "Nobody is taking you anywhere. You're safe. I promise you, you're safe."
Outside the glass window, Arthur Lane attempted to back away toward the elevators, but Vance and Miller stepped into his path, blocking his exit with absolute, physical authority.
"You can't touch me, Daniel!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with desperation. "I have political connections in this state! My firm controls—"
"Your firm is currently being raided by the FBI," a calm, sharp female voice announced from the end of the hallway.
Special Agent Sarah Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation walked into the unit, holding a dark blue badge folder and a stack of federal arrest warrants. Behind her were four armed federal marshals.
"Arthur Lane," Agent Vance said coldly, "you are under arrest for federal kidnapping, obstruction of justice, bank fraud, and child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent."
Arthur’s knees buckled. The federal marshals swept in, forcing his arms behind his back and slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Where is my daughter?!" Arthur screamed as he was hauled toward the elevator. "Victoria! Call our lawyers!"
"Your daughter was taken into federal custody twenty minutes ago at the estate, Mr. Lane," Agent Vance replied calmly. "She was caught attempting to destroy physical evidence related to the 2004 kidnapping."
As Arthur Lane was dragged weeping down the hallway, the heavy tension in the air finally shattered, leaving behind a silence so quiet you could hear the steady beep-beep-beep of Leo’s heart monitor.
Daniel walked into the room, stepping softly toward the bed. He looked down at Leo, then looked at me, his emerald eyes shining with tears of relief.
"Is he going to be okay?" Daniel asked quietly.
"He needs his surgery," I whispered, holding Leo tight.
Daniel turned to the head of pediatric surgery, who was standing nervously near the doorway. "Dr. Vance, prepare the surgical suite immediately. Import the top pediatric cardiac team from Boston if necessary. All costs will be covered by the Hastings Family Foundation."
The doctor nodded vigorously. "Right away, Mr. Hastings! We can have him in surgery by seven AM!"
Leo looked up at Daniel, his big brown eyes filled with innocent curiosity. "Amara... who is that big man?"

I looked at Daniel, then down at the star-shaped mark on my left wrist—the crimson symbol of a past I had never known, and a future that was finally beginning.
"Leo," I said softly, smiling through my tears. "This is our big brother."
