Chapter 7 - The Twenty-Year Lie

I turned in my seat, staring at Daniel in utter shock. "What?!"

"My security team has been quietly investigating Lane Financial Group for six months," Daniel explained, his voice tight with suppressed fury as he navigated a sharp turn, the tires screaming against the wet asphalt. "Twenty years ago, Victoria's father, Arthur Lane, was our family’s chief financial officer. He mismanaged fifty million dollars of Hastings capital in failed offshore investments."

"The ransom..." I gasped, pieces of the terrifying puzzle suddenly locking into place. "The kidnapping ransom was fifty million dollars!"

"Exactly," Daniel said bitterly. "Arthur Lane faked your kidnapping to cover up his embezzlement. He took the ransom money from my father, filled his financial hole, and dropped you off at that fire station in Maine, paying off a corrupt local officer to bury the records. He thought you were gone forever. He thought the 'dead sister' story was sealed."

"And then Victoria saw me tonight," I realized, terror washing over me. "She saw the mark on my wrist!"

"Victoria didn't just see the mark," Daniel said coldly. "She knew who you were the moment you walked into that ballroom. Her father kept records of your birthmark in his private vault just in case he ever needed to leverage our family. When she saw you, she realized that if you were identified, federal investigators would re-open the kidnapping case, trace the financial trail back to her father, and destroy their entire family empire."

My hands shook violently in my lap. "So tripping me... striking me with the crop... she wasn't just throwing a tantrum. She was trying to provoke a reaction... trying to get me thrown out into the storm before anyone could see my face!"

"She was trying to eliminate you," Daniel growled, pulling the SUV hard into the emergency bay of Saint Jude’s Children's Hospital, the brakes screeching to a halt outside the glass sliding doors.

Three black sedans belonging to the Hastings security detail pulled in right behind us.

Daniel unbuckled his seatbelt, pulled a heavy tactical radio from his belt, and looked at me. "Stay behind me, Lily. Tonight, the Lane family pays for twenty years of lies."

We charged through the sliding glass doors of the hospital. The main lobby was quiet, but as we reached the fourth-floor pediatric intensive care unit, shouting could be heard echoing down the pristine white hallway.

"I don't care what you say, doctor!" a sharp, arrogant male voice bellowed outside room 412. "This child is being transferred to a state facility under the authority of Lane Financial’s medical oversight board! Step aside!"

Arthur Lane—a middle-aged man with thinning grey hair, dressed in an expensive cashmere coat—was pushing past a terrified nurse, flanked by two large private guards.

Inside the room, little Leo was sitting up in his bed, his tiny hands gripping his blanket, his oxygen mask slightly crooked as he whimpered in terror.

"Amara!" Leo cried out through the glass window, seeing me run down the hallway. "Amara, help me!"
