Chapter 9 - The Heiress Unmasked

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had finally passed over Connecticut.
The news of the scandal had shattered the financial world. Headlines dominated every newspaper and television network across the country:
HEIRESS UNMASKED: VICTORIA LANE ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO 2004 HASTINGS KIDNAPPING. LANE FINANCIAL GROUP COLLAPSES AS FBI UNCOVERS DECADES OF FRAUD. MISSING HASTINGS HEIRESS FOUND WORKING AS SERVER AT FAMILY GALA.
In the top-floor VIP recovery suite of Saint Jude’s Hospital, the sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Leo lay asleep in his bed, his cheeks flushed with healthy color, his chest rising and falling with a strong, steady rhythm. His four-hour pulmonary valve replacement had been a complete success. For the first time in his life, his heart was beating normally.
I sat in a comfortable armchair beside his bed, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater provided by Eleanor. The bandages on my back had been replaced with lightweight surgical dressings, and the pain had faded to a dull, manageable ache.
The door opened quietly, and Eleanor walked in, leaning lightly on her pearl-handled cane. She was accompanied by two senior estate attorneys carrying leather briefcases.
"How is our little warrior doing?" Eleanor asked gently, sitting in the chair beside me and taking my hand.
"The doctors said he can go home in three days," I said, tears of gratitude welling in my eyes. "Grandma... I don't even know how to thank you. For everything."
"Thank me?" Eleanor said, her voice trembling as she squeezed my fingers. "My dear child, you brought our family back from the dead. For twenty years, this mansion was a dark, hollow grave filled with grief and guilt. You saved us."
One of the attorneys stepped forward, opening a thick leather folder on the bedside table. "Miss Hastings—or Miss Johnson, whichever name you prefer—we have finalized the legal restoration of your identity. Your trust fund, which has been accumulating interest for twenty years, has been reactivated under the authority of the Hastings estate."
He slid a document toward me.
"Your current net worth is calculated at four hundred and fifty million dollars, including a thirty percent voting share in Hastings International," the attorney explained professionally. "You are officially recognized as the co-heir to the estate alongside your brother, Daniel."
I stared at the numbers on the paper, my breath catching in my throat. Just three days ago, I was weeping over a broken four-dollar glass of wine, wondering how I was going to pay for Leo’s five-hundred-dollar medication.
"What about Victoria and her father?" I asked softly.
Eleanor’s soft expression hardened into iron. "Arthur Lane was denied bail this morning. He will spend the rest of his natural life in a federal penitentiary. Victoria was granted bail on a two-million-dollar bond paid by her mother’s relatives, but her reputation, her social standing, and her family's wealth are completely destroyed. She will face trial for felony assault and witness intimidation next month."
The door opened again, and Daniel walked into the room, holding a cardboard tray carrying three hot lattes.
He set the coffees down, pulled a wooden chair up beside us, and looked at me with a warm, proud smile. "How does it feel to be officially rich, Lily?"

I looked down at my hands, then at Leo sleeping peacefully, and finally at Daniel and Eleanor.
"I don't care about the money, Daniel," I said softly, my voice filled with absolute conviction. "I just care that my family is whole."
