Chapter 1 - The Accusation

“You have no business calling yourself a responsible mother.”
Melissa Grant's voice cut through the private dining room like a knife.
Every conversation stopped.
Nora Bennett stood beside the service cart with her hands frozen around a stack of folded napkins. Her eight-month-old daughter, Lily, slept quietly in the portable bassinet tucked behind the hostess station.
Nora looked at Melissa. Then at the dozen employees pretending not to stare.
“I'm sorry?”
Melissa folded her arms. “You heard me.”
Nora felt heat rise into her face. “Lily has been sick all week. My sitter canceled this morning, and I had no one else.”
“That isn't my problem.”
“I know.”
“Then why is your child here?”
“Because I couldn't leave her alone.”
Melissa laughed sharply. “You're working at Harbor & Ash, Nora. This isn't someone's living room.”
Nora glanced toward the bassinet. “I only brought her because tonight's dinner was supposed to be small. I arranged for my sister to pick her up before the guests arrived.”
“And where is your sister?”
“She called twenty minutes ago. Her car broke down.”
Melissa's expression hardened. “Always an excuse.”
Nora swallowed. There had been a time when Melissa's approval mattered. Not anymore.
“I've worked here for three years,” Nora said quietly. “I've never missed a shift without calling.”
“And yet you're standing here with a baby during a private event.”
“She isn't interfering with anything.”
“She's a liability.”
Nora's jaw tightened. “She's my daughter.”
“And that's exactly the problem.”
The words hurt more than Nora expected. She looked at Lily. The baby shifted beneath her pink blanket. Nora stepped toward her.
“I'll finish the event, then I'll go home.”
Melissa moved in front of her. “No. You're leaving now.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I can't.”
“Why not?”
“Because I need this job.”
Melissa smiled. “Then maybe you should have thought about that before becoming a mother.”
Silence. Someone behind them gasped. Nora stared at Melissa.
She had spent eight months trying to prove that motherhood hadn't made her less capable. She had worked double shifts. Skipped lunch. Answered emails at three in the morning. She had learned how to balance a crying baby against one hip while calculating banquet costs with the other hand.
And now, in front of everyone, Melissa had reduced her entire life to one accusation.
Nora's eyes burned. “I am responsible for my daughter.”
Melissa shook her head. “No, Nora. You're responsible for your job.”
Then she pointed toward the employee entrance. “Go.”
Nora bent down and picked up Lily. The baby stirred.
“Mommy…”
It was barely a sound, but it broke Nora's heart. She kissed her daughter's forehead. “It's okay, sweetheart.”
Then she noticed something strange. The private office door at the end of the corridor was open. That door was never open. Ever.
Everett Calloway's office. The owner of Harbor & Ash. The man employees almost never saw.
Nora had heard stories about him. Billionaire restaurateur. Widower. Perfectionist. Private. Cold. The kind of owner who could walk into a room and make an entire staff straighten their backs.
Nora had never met him. But now she saw a shadow behind the frosted glass. Someone was inside.
Melissa followed her gaze. “Don't even think about going in there.”
Nora looked at her. “I wasn't.”
“Good.” Melissa turned away.
Nora hugged Lily tighter. Then the baby suddenly began coughing. Once. Twice. Hard.
Nora's entire body went rigid. “Lily?”
The baby coughed again, her tiny face reddening. Nora panicked. She rushed toward the private office.
Melissa grabbed her arm. “Where are you going?”
“My daughter is choking.”
“You can't go in there.”
“Let go of me!” Nora pulled free.
She opened the private office door and froze.
Everett Calloway was sitting unconscious in a leather chair. His white shirt was open at the collar. His head had fallen sideways. And Lily's pink blanket was lying across his chest. A tiny baby bottle rested on the desk beside him.
Nora stared. “What…”
Then Everett's eyes opened. He looked directly at her and whispered:
“Your daughter saved my life.”
May you like
Nora couldn't breathe. Behind her, Melissa appeared in the doorway. Her face went completely white.
Because Everett Calloway was not supposed to be in that office tonight. And no one knew why he had Nora's baby in his arms.
