Chapter 2 - The Locked Mansion

The heavy mahogany doors of the Moretti estate clicked shut, their electronic locks engaging with a series of sharp metallic thuds.

Dante Moretti sat upright in his leather armchair. Though his breathing was still ragged and his hands trembled slightly from the massive surge of epinephrine rushing through his bloodstream, the terrifying fog of anaphylactic shock was rapidly clearing from his eyes. His gaze was sharp, predatory, and deadly.

Marcus Vale stood in the center of the marble library, holding the tiny glass vial wrapped securely inside a linen handkerchief.

"Nobody enters," Dante said, his voice quiet, raspy, but carrying an unquestionable weight of absolute authority. "And nobody leaves. Marcus, gather every person in this house into the grand foyer. Servants, guards, kitchen staff, guests. Everyone."

"Yes, Boss," Marcus replied instantly. He tapped his earpiece. "Security detail, this is Vale. Initiate protocol Delta. Full lockdown. Sweep the perimeter and herd all staff to the foyer immediately."

In the corner of the room, Mara, Lily's nineteen-year-old babysitter, was shaking violently. She pulled Lily back against her skirt, trying to shield the little girl from the armed guards moving through the hallways.

"Mr. Moretti," Mara stammered, her voice high and terrified. "Please... Lily and I were just here because my mother works in the estate kitchen. Lily didn't mean to intrude. We can just go home—"

"You are not going anywhere," Dante said, turning his head slowly to look at the young woman.

Lily stepped out from behind Mara's skirt, still clutching her stuffed rabbit. "Is your throat better, Mr. Scary Man?"

Dante’s fierce expression softened by a fraction—a rare, almost alien occurrence that made his head guard, Marcus, pause in mid-stride.

"My throat is better, Lily," Dante said softly, leaning down so he was closer to eye level with the four-year-old. "Because of you. But right now, someone in this house tried to do something very bad. I need to find out who."

"Like a detective?" Lily asked, her brown eyes wide with curiosity.

"Yes," Dante said, a faint, dark smile touching his lips. "Exactly like a detective."

Within ten minutes, twenty-four people were lined up in two neat rows across the marble foyer of the estate.

Among them were the head chef, the housekeepers, four primary security guards, Dante’s personal assistant, and his younger half-brother, Julian Moretti, who had arrived at the house only an hour before the incident.

Julian stepped out of the lineup, his hands thrust deep into the pockets of his tailored Italian suit. "Dante, this is ridiculous. You had an allergic reaction. You've always been sensitive to shellfish and nuts. The kitchen made a mistake—"

"The kitchen knows my allergies better than they know their own names," Dante cut him off, stepping into the foyer. He was leaning slightly on a wooden walking stick, but his posture was imposing. "And what happened to me wasn't an accidental cross-contamination. My throat closed in under sixty seconds. That was a concentrated, pharmaceutical-grade extract."

Dante held up his hand, and Marcus displayed the glass vial wrapped in the handkerchief.

"This was found on the floor right beside my glass of scotch," Dante said, his eyes scanning the faces of every person in the room. "Someone poured it into my glass while I was reviewing the shipping manifests in the library."

A ripple of nervous murmurs passed through the lined-up staff.

"Boss," the head chef, a burly man named Marco, stepped forward, his face pale. "I swear on my mother's grave, I prepared your drink myself and placed it on the silver tray. No one touched it except..."

Marco paused, looking nervously down the line.

"Except who?" Dante asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

Marco pointed a trembling finger toward the end of the row. "Except Thomas. He brought the tray into the library."

Every eye in the room shifted to Thomas—the young valet who had dropped the silver tray in the hallway moments after Lily saved Dante's life.

Thomas shrank back against the wall, his hands shaking frantically. "No! I didn't! I just carried the tray! I didn't put anything in the glass! I swear!"

Marcus moved fast, pinning Thomas against the wall with an arm across his chest. He reached into Thomas’s jacket pockets, pulling out a leather wallet, a phone, and a small set of keys.

"Look at his phone, Marcus," Dante ordered.

Thomas began to cry. "Please, Mr. Moretti! I didn't know it was poison! A man paid me five thousand dollars just to drop a liquid into your cup! He said it was just a sleeping medicine to make you take a break!"

Dante walked up to Thomas, staring into the young man's terrified eyes.

"Who paid you?" Dante asked quietly.

May you like

Thomas swallowed hard, his throat moving nervously. "I... I don't know his name! He contacted me on an encrypted app! He said if I didn't do it, he would..."

Before Thomas could finish his sentence, the glass window above the front entrance shattered into a thousand pieces.
