Chapter 7 - The Mother’s House

A modest two-story suburban house sat at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in suburban Chicago.
Sarah Carter sat at her kitchen counter, frantically typing on her laptop while repeatedly trying to dial her daughter's babysitter on her cell phone.
"Come on, Mara, answer," Sarah muttered under her breath, tears of anxiety welling in her eyes. "You were supposed to bring Lily back two hours ago."
Sarah was a twenty-eight-year-old pediatric nurse. Ever since her husband passed away two years ago, Lily had been her entire world. Mara’s mother was Sarah's trusted housekeeper, which was the only reason Sarah had allowed Mara to watch Lily while she worked a double shift at the hospital.
Suddenly, the quiet suburban street outside echoed with the deep, throaty rumbles of three heavy, black armored SUVs pulling up in front of her driveway.
Sarah stood up, her heart pounding against her ribs. She walked nervously toward the front window and pulled back the blinds.
Four tall men in black suits and dark sunglasses stepped out of the vehicles, establishing a perimeter around her front lawn.
Then, the rear door of the center SUV opened.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark tailored suit stepped out. He was carrying a four-year-old girl in his arms, who was happily holding a large blue stuffed rabbit.
"Lily!" Sarah gasped.
She threw open the front door and ran out onto the porch. "Lily!"
"Mommy!" Lily chirped, waving her small hand wildly.
Dante walked up the concrete path to the porch, holding Lily securely against his chest. As Sarah approached, Marcus and two guards stepped forward to intercept her, but Dante held up a single hand.
"Stand down," Dante ordered his men. "This is her mother."
Sarah rushed forward, taking Lily from Dante's arms and clutching her daughter tightly against her chest, weeping with overwhelming relief. "Oh God, Lily! Are you okay? What happened? Who are these people?"
"I helped the scary man breathe, Mommy!" Lily announced proudly, rubbing her mother's cheek. "I used my orange pen!"
Sarah froze. She pulled back slightly, looking at her daughter, then up at the formidable, scarred man standing on her porch.
"Your... orange pen?" Sarah whispered, her face going pale. "Your EpiPen?"
Dante bowed his head slightly in a gesture of profound respect—a gesture no rival boss in Chicago had ever seen him give.
"Mrs. Carter," Dante said, his deep voice smooth and respectful. "My name is Dante Moretti. Four hours ago, I suffered a severe, life-threatening exposure to a lethal toxin. My airway was completely obstructed. My security detail was paralyzed by panic."
He looked down at Lily, his dark eyes softening completely.
"Your daughter stepped forward without fear. She recognized my symptoms, retrieved her personal epinephrine auto-injector from her backpack, and administered it to my thigh. She saved my life."
Sarah stared at Dante, completely speechless. She knew the name Moretti. Everyone in Chicago knew the name Moretti—it was a name associated with power, wealth, and dangerous underworld influence.
"She... she used her last EpiPen on you?" Sarah stammered.
"Yes," Dante said. "And because of that, she exposed herself to great danger from the people who attempted to harm me today."

Dante motioned to Marcus, who stepped forward carrying a heavy black leather briefcase.
"Mrs. Carter," Dante continued. "Your daughter gave me her life-saving medicine. In return, I am taking full responsibility for her safety and yours for the rest of my days."
