Chapter 10 - The Guardian's Promise

Three years later.

The grand auditorium of the International Medical Innovation Summit in Vienna, Austria, was packed with over two thousand doctors, scientists, and journalists from around the globe.

On the main stage, Sarah Carter stood behind the podium, addressing the crowd under the bright stage lights.

"Three years ago," Sarah spoke into the microphone, her voice confident and inspiring, "a simple four-year-old child proved that the smallest action can save a life. Today, through the Carter-Moretti Foundation, we are proud to announce the global rollout of the 'Lily-Pen'—a low-cost, smart auto-injector that automatically alerts emergency services the second it is deployed."

The auditorium erupted into thunderous applause.

Sitting in the front row of the VIP balcony above the stage was seven-year-old Lily Carter, wearing a pretty yellow dress, her legs swinging happily over the edge of her seat.

Sitting right beside her was Dante Moretti.

Over the past three years, Dante had officially stepped down from his active operational role in the Moretti logistics empire, transitioning the business entirely into legitimate international shipping and medical supply lines. He spent most of his time traveling between Switzerland and global foundation events.

"Mommy was great, right Uncle Dante?" Lily whispered, looking up at him with bright brown eyes.

"She was magnificent, Lily," Dante replied, adjusting the collar of his suit jacket.

As he moved his hand, the outline of a small red plastic case was visible inside his inner breast pocket—the same case Lily had given him three years ago on the terrace in Geneva. He had never taken a flight without it.

"Uncle Dante?" Lily asked, taking a sip of her apple juice.

"Yes, little one?"

"Are you still a scary man?"

Dante looked down at the little girl who had saved his life, changed his destiny, and given him a family he had never believed he deserved.

He smiled—a warm, gentle, genuine smile that lit up his eyes.

"To bad people, Lily," Dante whispered softly, taking her small hand in his. "I will always be a scary man. But to you... I am just your guardian."

Lily smiled happily, leaning her head against his arm as the applause below continued to roar through the great hall.

Outside the auditorium, under the vast European sky, the world moved on. Empires rose and fell, syndicates faded into history, but in the heart of the man everyone had once feared, a simple truth remained unbroken:

A four-year-old girl in a yellow dress had given him his life, and he would spend the rest of his guarding hers.
