Chapter 9 - The Swiss Sanctuary

Six months later.

The morning sun rose over the majestic, snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps, casting a brilliant golden light across the clear waters of Lake Geneva.

Perched on a lush green hillside overlooking the lake sat the Chateau de Moretti—a breathtaking, stone estate surrounded by manicured gardens, high security walls, and state-of-the-art surveillance systems.

In the rear courtyard of the estate, a brand-new, custom-built wooden playground stood on the soft green grass, complete with swings, climbing ropes, and a massive, winding yellow slide.

Four-year-old Lily Carter zipped down the yellow slide, squealing with pure delight as she landed safely on the soft rubber padding at the bottom.

"Again!" Lily giggled, scrambling to her feet and running back toward the wooden steps.

Sitting at a wrought-iron patio table nearby, Sarah Carter was sipping a cup of fresh espresso, looking over a stack of medical research grant proposals on her iPad. She looked healthier, relaxed, and entirely free of the crushing stress that had defined her life six months earlier.

A quiet step echoed on the stone terrace.

Dante Moretti walked out into the courtyard, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and slacks. He looked years younger than he had in Chicago. The dark circles under his eyes were gone, and his posture was relaxed.

"Good morning, Sarah," Dante said politely, stepping over to the table.

"Good morning, Dante," Sarah smiled, setting her iPad down. "How was your flight from London?"

"Productive," Dante replied, sitting down across from her. "The Viper Syndicate has been completely dismantled by European law enforcement. The last of their leadership was arrested yesterday afternoon. Chicago is entirely quiet."

"So... it's over?" Sarah asked softly.

"It is over," Dante confirmed. "You and Lily are completely safe. You can return to America whenever you wish."

Sarah looked out across the sunny courtyard at her daughter, who was currently trying to teach a large, friendly German Shepherd guard dog how to sit properly.

"I don't think we want to go back," Sarah admitted, a gentle smile touching her lips. "Lily loves her school here. And the research foundation just approved our first major clinical trial for a painless epinephrine patch."

Dante looked at her, a quiet sense of satisfaction filling his chest. "I am glad to hear that."

"Mr. Scary Man!" Lily’s voice rang out across the lawn.

She came running over to the table, her tiny shoes slapping against the stone terrace, clutching a small red plastic case in her hands.

She skidded to a halt beside Dante’s chair and proudly set the red case on the table.

Dante looked down at it. It was a brand-new, twin-pack case of pediatric EpiPens.

"What's this, Lily?" Dante asked, tilting his head.

"It's for you!" Lily announced proudly, crossing her small arms over her chest. "Mommy said you travel a lot on airplanes. So I'm giving you my spare ones so your throat never gets sick again!"

Dante stared at the red plastic case for a long moment.

In his world, men carried guns, knives, and millions of dollars in untraceable bearer bonds to protect themselves. But sitting on the table before him was a tiny red plastic case containing two hundred milligrams of medicine, offered freely by a child who cared for his safety.

Slowly, Dante picked up the case, placing it carefully inside the inner breast pocket of his jacket, right over his heart.

"I will keep this with me everywhere I go, Lily," Dante said, his voice filled with deep, quiet emotion. "I promise."

Lily beamed with pride, giving him a quick, warm hug around his neck before turning around and running back toward the playground slide.
