Chapter 5 - The Shadow in the Mirror

The basement room became deathly quiet.
Mara froze by the door, her eyes wide with terror as she saw her own reflection on the massive wall monitor.
"M-Mr. Moretti..." Mara stammered, backing away until her spine hit the concrete wall. "I... I can explain—"
Marcus turned his weapon on her in a fraction of a second, the laser sight resting squarely on her chest. "Don't move a single inch."
Lily dropped her cookie onto the plate, looking back and forth between Mara and Dante with confused, innocent eyes. "Mara? Why is the man pointing a flashlight at you?"
Dante raised his hand, gesturing for Marcus to lower the weapon slightly.
"Stay quiet, Lily," Dante said gently to the child, before turning his gaze onto the terrified young woman. "Mara. You saw Julian poison my drink at 2:09 PM."
Mara began to cry silently, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "I... I was looking for Lily. She had run off toward the gardens. I opened the terrace door and saw Mr. Julian putting something in the cup. I was terrified! I didn't know what to do!"
"You didn't warn me," Dante said, his voice cold and analytical. "You didn't knock the glass over. You didn't tell security. You walked away and let me drink it."
"He saw me!" Mara sobbed, falling to her knees. "Julian saw me standing in the doorway! He came out right after and grabbed my arm. He told me if I said a single word to anyone, he would make sure my mother and I were killed! He gave me a phone and told me to make sure Lily stayed upstairs so she wouldn't see anything!"
Dante stared at her for a long, heavy moment.
"You traded my life for your own comfort," Dante said softly.
"I was scared!" Mara wept. "He's your brother! He has guns, he has money! What was I supposed to do?!"
"You were supposed to do what a four-year-old child did without hesitation," Dante said, his voice ringing like iron against stone. "She saw a human being dying and she stepped forward. You saw a murder in progress and you looked the other way."
Dante stood up from his chair.
"Marcus."
"Yes, Boss?"
"Lock Mara in the holding cell downstairs. Do not harm her, but she does not touch a phone or see the light of day until this is over."
"No! Please! Lily!" Mara pleaded as Marcus grabbed her arm, pulling her toward the back door of the security center.
Lily stood up from her stool, reaching out her small hands. "Mara?"
Dante stepped smoothly between Lily and the door, blocking the scene from her view. He knelt down in front of the little girl, resting his hands on her shoulders.
"Mara has to answer some questions for the police, Lily," Dante lied softly, his voice calm and reassuring. "She's going to be away for a little while."
Lily looked into Dante's eyes, her small face thoughtful. "Is she in trouble?"
"She made a bad choice," Dante said honestly. "And when grown-ups make bad choices, there are consequences. But you... you made the bravest choice I've ever seen."
Lily reached into her pink backpack and pulled out her stuffed rabbit, extending it toward Dante. "You can hold Barnaby if you're sad."

Dante looked at the worn, plush rabbit, then up at the little girl. A soft, genuine smile appeared on his face. He took the rabbit gently.
"Thank you, Lily," Dante murmured. "Now, it's time for me to pay a visit to my brother."
