Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Trap

For the next three days, snow blanketed the Wisconsin woods, isolating the cabin from the outside world.

Claire’s physical strength slowly returned, though her wrists remained raw and heavily bandaged. Damian stayed at the cabin, while Mason handled operations in Chicago, relaying information through encrypted satellite phones.

Sitting by the grand stone fireplace, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, Claire laid out the truth of her marriage to Damian.

"I wasn't just his wife," Claire explained, staring into the dancing flames. "I was his father's personal secretary at Mercer Financial for four years before Daniel—my father—died. My father held twenty-two percent of the voting shares in Mercer Financial. When he died, those shares passed to me."

"And Evan married you six months later," Damian noted, taking a seat across from her.

"He was attentive. Charming. Devoted," Claire said, a bitter edge in her voice. "He made me feel safe when I was drowning in grief. But two years ago, he asked me to sign a power of attorney so he could 'manage' my shares during a restructuring phase. I refused. I told him my father wanted those shares held in trust for the company's pension fund."

"That was when the subtle work began," Damian deduced softly.

"Yes," Claire nodded. "Small things at first. He’d move my car keys and tell me I forgot where I put them. He’d cancel dinner reservations and swear I never made them. Then six months ago, he started telling our friends that I was suffering from early-onset dementia or severe dissociative episodes. He paid Dr. Vance to document my 'failing mental state'."

"Gaslighting on an institutional scale," Damian observed, his dark eyes hardening into cold marble. "If Vance declares you mentally incompetent, Evan assumes total legal control of your shares without needing your signature. He gets the voting majority at Mercer Financial."

"And if I die or disappear while 'psychotic', he inherits everything directly," Claire added, shuddering. "Why did he take me to your warehouse, Damian? Of all the empty places in Illinois, why there?"

Damian leaned back, steepling his fingers.

"Because Mercer Financial is currently trying to acquire a parcel of waterfront property in East Chicago owned by Caruso Maritime," Damian revealed. "Evan wanted to tie your disappearance directly to my family. If you were found dead or traumatized on Caruso property, he could frame me for extortion or kidnapping, destroying my company's leverage in the land negotiations while simultaneously getting rid of you."

Claire stared at him in utter disbelief. "He was going to ruin two lives with one stone."

"He thought he was," Damian corrected softly. "He didn't realize that I check my own property alarms."

Mason walked into the living room, brushing snow from his dark overcoat. He carried a secure laptop and placed it on the dining table.

"The police report Evan filed has been leaked to the Chicago Tribune," Mason reported gravely. "They're running a piece tomorrow morning: Wife of Prominent Financial Executive Missing After Mental Health Crisis. Evan is offering a hundred thousand dollar reward for any information leading to your safe return."

"He's making himself look like the grieving, frantic husband," Claire said, her fists clenching within her bandages.

"Let him play his role," Damian said, standing up and walking toward the table. "The higher he builds his pedestal, the further he falls when we kick it out from under him."

He looked down at Claire, his voice dropping into that quiet, absolute tone of authority.

"We aren't going to hide in Wisconsin, Claire. We are going back to Chicago. And we are going to tear Evan Mercer's life down brick by brick."
