Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

The annual shareholder summit of Mercer Financial was held in the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel, overlooking Lake Michigan.
Over three hundred high-profile investors, board members, and news journalists filled the room. At the center of the main stage stood Evan Mercer, wearing a flawless charcoal tuxedo, looking every bit the grieving, brave executive managing a crisis.
He stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone as the room quieted down.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Evan began, his voice laced with practiced sorrow. "As many of you know, my beloved wife, Claire, has recently suffered a severe, tragic mental breakdown. Her absence today weighs heavily on my heart."
A murmur of sympathy rippled through the audience.
"In light of these unfortunate medical circumstances," Evan continued, pulling out a set of legal documents, "Dr. Arthur Vance and the probate court have granted me temporary legal guardianship of her estate, including her twenty-two percent voting interest in Mercer Financial. With these shares, I officially move to approve the immediate emergency restructuring of our pension fund—"
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the grand ballroom swung wide open.
"I object to that motion!" a sharp, clear voice echoed across the massive room.
The entire ballroom turned in unison.
Walking down the center aisle, wearing an exquisite white tailored suit, her dark hair styled flawlessly and her posture immaculate, was Claire Whitaker.
Walking beside her, broad-shouldered and imposing in a dark tuxedo, was Damian Caruso.
Behind them stood six armed state troopers and the Assistant District Attorney of Illinois.
Evan’s face went dead white. The papers in his hands fluttered to the floor.
"Claire?" Evan stammered into the live microphone, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "You... you're sick! Someone call security! She's suffering from a dissociative break!"
"I am completely sane, Evan," Claire declared loudly, her voice echoing through the silent room as she reached the front of the stage. "And I have the authentic medical evaluations signed by Dr. Vance to prove it."
The Assistant District Attorney stepped up to the stage, pulling a fresh federal warrant from his jacket.
"Evan Mercer," the attorney announced into the microphone. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, pension fraud, extortion, and unlawful imprisonment."
Evan backed away from the podium, his eyes darting frantically toward the side exits, but two state troopers immediately stepped onto the stage, blocking his path.
"This is a lie!" Evan screamed, his composure completely shattering as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "She's insane! Caruso kidnapped her! He framed me!"
Claire walked up to the edge of the stage, looking down at her husband with cold, unflinching clarity.

"You left me in the cold to freeze, Evan," Claire said softly, her words carrying across the silent ballroom. "But you forgot one thing: I know how to survive."
As the police dragged Evan Mercer off the stage in front of flashing news cameras, the ballroom erupted into total chaos.
