Chapter 5 - The Financial Abyss

While Dr. Vance was being turned into a witness, Claire was working tirelessly inside Damian's secure penthouse, utilizing her deep knowledge of Mercer Financial's internal operations.

Using an encrypted terminal provided by Damian's IT specialists, Claire accessed the public and private audit ledgers of Mercer Financial, tracing every transaction Evan had made during his five-year tenure as executive vice president.

By mid-afternoon, she found the smoking gun.

"He didn't just want my voting shares to control the company," Claire called out as Damian walked into the study, carrying two coffee cups. "He needed my shares to cover up a massive embezzlement scheme."

Damian set the coffee down, leaning over her shoulder to inspect the screen. "Show me."

"Look at these transfers," Claire pointed out, her finger tracing a series of complex foreign currency trades. "Over the last eighteen months, Evan transferred forty-two million dollars out of the employee pension fund into an offshore entity in Panama called Vanguard Logistics."

"Vanguard Logistics is a dummy firm," Damian noted instantly. "It was dissolved six months ago."

"Exactly," Claire said, her eyes shining with intense focus. "Evan took the pension money to cover massive losses he sustained in high-risk illegal cryptocurrency short-positions. My father's twenty-two percent voting stake is the only thing blocking the board from ordering a full external audit of the pension reserve."

"If you hand over control of your shares to him, he uses his voting power to approve a merger with a ghost company, absorbing the pension fund and wiping out the audit trail," Damian realized, a slow, approving smile touching his lips. "He wasn't just trying to lock you away, Claire. He was fighting to stay out of federal prison."

"And if I show up at the annual shareholder meeting tomorrow..." Claire looked up at Damian, her expression resolute.

"If you show up," Damian said, "you expose his fraud in front of every board member, investor, and SEC official in Chicago."

"He'll try to stop me before I reach the podium," Claire warned.

Damian leaned down, his dark eyes meeting hers with fierce certainty.

"He won't even get close to you, Claire. I'll personally walk you through the front door."
