Chapter 7 - The Final Ledger

In the weeks following Evan Mercer's public arrest, the fallout swept through Chicago's financial sector like a tidal wave.
Evan was held without bail at the Cook County Detention Center, facing over thirty federal counts of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. Dr. Vance turned state's evidence, testifying in exchange for a reduced sentence, revealing the full extent of Evan's plot to institutionalize Claire.
With Evan removed, the board of trustees at Mercer Financial unanimously elected Claire Whitaker as the new Chairperson of the Board. Her father's twenty-two percent voting shares were officially secured in a protected trust for the employee pension fund, fully restoring the missing forty-two million dollars through recovered offshore assets.
On a quiet Friday evening, Claire sat in her new spacious executive office on the top floor of the Mercer Financial tower, reviewing the final restructuring reports.
A gentle knock sounded at her door.
Damian Caruso walked in, wearing a sharp black coat, carrying a bottle of rare vintage champagne and two crystal glasses.
"May I come in, Madam Chair?" Damian asked with a slight, handsome smile.
Claire laughed softly, standing up from her desk. "You don't need permission, Damian. You practically built this victory."
Damian set the champagne on the coffee table, pouring two glasses and handing one to her.
"To justice," Damian toasted gently.
"To truth," Claire replied, touching her glass to his.
They took a sip, enjoying the quiet warmth of the office as the city lights flickered outside the tall windows.
"How does it feel to have your name back?" Damian asked, watching her warmly.
"It feels... strange," Claire admitted, looking out at the skyline. "For five years, I thought my life was defined by the men around me. My father's legacy, Evan's control... I didn't know who I was when the doors were locked."
She turned to face Damian, stepping closer to him.

"But you showed me that I didn't need saving," Claire said softly. "You just gave me the tools to break my own chains."
"You broke them yourself, Claire," Damian said, his dark eyes filled with absolute admiration. "I just brought the cutters."
