Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

Three months later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago, melting the ice along Lake Michigan and bringing fresh green life to the city parks.

At the waterfront shipping terminal of Caruso Maritime Holdings, a massive new logistics initiative was being officially inaugurated—a joint venture between Caruso Maritime and Mercer Financial aimed at developing clean, sustainable trade infrastructure along the Great Lakes.

A crowd of reporters, civic leaders, and company employees gathered near the newly constructed pier.

Claire stood at the podium, wearing an elegant navy dress, her smile bright and confident as she addressed the crowd.

"Business in Chicago doesn't have to be built on secrets or fear," Claire stated into the microphone. "It can be built on honor, accountability, and real partnership."

The crowd applauded enthusiastically as she stepped down from the stage.

Elias, Mason, and several key board members walked up to congratulate her.

Damian stood a short distance away near the water's edge, watching her with quiet pride.

Claire walked over to him, slipping her arm comfortably through his.

"How was the speech?" she asked softly.

"Perfect," Damian smiled, looking down at her. "As always."

They walked together along the pier, listening to the gentle lap of the lake water against the steel hulls of the cargo ships.

"Mason told me Evan accepted a plea deal this morning," Claire mentioned quietly. "Twenty-five years in federal prison without parole."

"He got off easy," Damian remarked, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous tone.

"It's enough," Claire said, looking at Damian's sharp profile. "He's in the past now. The future is what matters."

Damian stopped walking, turning to face her. He reached out, his warm, broad hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone with immense tenderness.

"And what does your future look like, Claire Whitaker?" Damian asked softly, his dark eyes searching hers.

Claire leaned into his touch, her heart swelling with deep, unyielding warmth.

May you like

"My future," Claire whispered, smiling up at him, "looks a lot like standing right here beside you."

Damian smiled—a rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his powerful face—and pulled her gently into his arms, kissing her softly under the warm spring sun.
