Chapter 10 - The Moretti Legacy

One year later.

The summer afternoon sun glittered warmly over the manicured gardens of the North Shore estate.

A warm breeze rustled through the ancient oak trees, carrying the sweet scent of blooming roses and fresh lake water.

On the grand stone patio overlooking the lawn, a long wooden dining table was set for a private family celebration. White linen, crystal glasses, and silver cutlery caught the afternoon light.

Sitting around the table were the key members of the restructured Moretti family—Dmitri, Marco, and several senior captains who had proven their unshakeable loyalty during the turbulent year past.

At the head of the table sat Damien Moretti, wearing a clean white linen shirt, pouring a glass of sparkling wine for his wife.

Vanessa sat beside him, wearing a flowing lavender silk sundress, her face glowing with a radiant, profound happiness.

Her left hand rested gently over her rounded belly—she was six months pregnant with their first child.

Dmitri stood up from his chair, raising his glass high into the air.

"To the Don," Dmitri toasted loudly, his gravelly voice filled with genuine warmth. "And to the Dona who keeps him alive!"

The entire table broke into enthusiastic, joyful cheers, raising their glasses in a booming toast that echoed across the quiet lawn.

Damien smiled, clinking his glass against Vanessa’s, then leaning down to press a soft, tender kiss against her temple.

"How is the heir feeling today?" Damien whispered softly, resting his broad hand over her warm belly.

"The heir is currently kicking my ribs," Vanessa murmured with a beautiful, breathless laugh, placing her hand over his. "I think he inherits his father's lack of patience."

"Or his mother's strike technique," Damien teased gently, his eyes sparkling with deep love.

As the afternoon turned to twilight, the guests gradually departed, leaving the grand estate wrapped in a peaceful, golden calm.

Damien and Vanessa walked slowly down the stone steps toward the edge of the lake, his arm wrapped securely around her waist, supporting her every step.

They stood at the stone seawall, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery ribbons of deep purple, crimson, and gold.

"Are you happy, Vanessa?" Damien asked softly, pulling her closer against his side.

Vanessa looked out over the vast, calm waters of Lake Michigan, then turned her face up to look at the man who had given her everything she had ever dreamed of—not by keeping her in a glass box, but by standing beside her as an equal.

"I spent half my life in the dark, Damien," Vanessa whispered, her voice rich with an unshakeable, permanent peace. "I thought safety was something you had to build with walls and weapons."

She took his hand, pressing it gently against her cheek, then down to her belly where their child stirred softly.

"Now I know safety isn't a place," Vanessa said, looking deep into his dark, loving eyes. "Safety is standing beside the person who knows every shadow in your soul... and loves you even more for the light you bring into theirs."

Damien smiled—a warm, true, magnificent smile that belonged only to her.

He pulled his wife close under the emerging stars, kissing her deeply as the quiet lake breeze sang around them—a dangerous boss, a deadly wife, and an empire built on an unshakeable, everlasting love.
