Chapter 6 - The Glass Balcony

Inside the grand study of the Valenti mansion, Don Giovanni Valenti was pacing furiously across a massive Persian rug.

He was a heavy, broad-shouldered man in his late sixties, with thick grey hair slicked back, wearing an expensive silk robe over his shirt.

Sitting at a computer terminal near the fireplace was his chief tech operative, frantically hitting keys.

"What do you mean the signal is gone?!" Giovanni bellowed, slamming a heavy crystal tumbler of whiskey onto his desk. "Luca said the transmitter was secured on the grain elevator!"

"The signal went dead three minutes ago, Don Giovanni!" the technician yelled back, sweat pouring down his forehead. "The relay transmitter isn't responding! Either the hardware failed, or... or Moretti’s men found it!"

"Impossible!" Giovanni shouted. "Damien Moretti is bleeding out in his study! Luca said he put a bullet in his shoulder himself!"

"Luca was wrong."

The deep, gravelly baritone voice echoed from the open French doors leading out to the second-floor balcony.

Giovanni froze, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as he turned slowly toward the balcony.

Damien Moretti stepped through the sheer silk curtains into the room.

He was wearing full black tactical gear, his suppressed submachine gun held low and steady, his face smudged with dark camouflage grease, his dark eyes burning with the cold, lethal fire of a demon raised from the grave.

Beside him stepped Vanessa, holding a silenced pistol in her right hand, her expression completely calm, her stance perfectly balanced.

"Damien..." Giovanni gasped, backing away until his thighs hit the heavy mahogany desk. "How... how did you get past the perimeter?!"

Before the technician near the fireplace could reach for the alarm button under the desk, Vanessa raised her pistol and fired a single, soft thwip.

The technician dropped to the floor, clutching his shoulder as his laptop shattered from a direct bullet hit.

"Don't move, Giovanni," Damien warned softly, stepping into the center of the room. "The perimeter is secured. Your guards near the greenhouse are sleeping. Your warehouse strike team is in federal custody."

Giovanni’s heavy chest heaved as he stared at Damien, then his frantic gaze drifted to Vanessa.

"Who is she?" Giovanni rasped, horror filling his face as he recognized the woman standing beside his chief rival. "That's... that's your wife! The girl from the charity auctions!"

"She was my wife at the auction, Giovanni," Damien said, stepping closer, the barrel of his weapon never wavering. "Tonight, she's the reason you failed."

Giovanni swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he tried to regain his composure. He was an old mob boss; he knew when he was cornered, but he also knew how to bargain.

"Listen to me, Damien," Giovanni stammered, holding his hands up in a desperate surrender gesture. "It wasn't personal! It was business! Senator Blake and Moretti came to me three months ago! They had the blueprints, they had the political backing! They said you were getting weak—that you were soft because of the girl!"

Damien’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Soft?"

"I thought she was your weakness, Damien!" Giovanni wept, tears of panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "Everyone in the city thought you were hiding her because she was fragile! We thought if we struck you, she would crumble and give up the family assets!"

Vanessa stepped forward, her leather boots clicking softly against the hardwood floor surrounding the Persian rug.

She stood directly in front of Giovanni Valenti, looking up at the feared Don with a cold, terrifying smile.

"That was Damien's mistake, Giovanni," Vanessa whispered smoothly, raising her silenced pistol until the cold steel barrel pressed directly against the center of Valenti’s forehead. "He thought he was protecting me from his world. He never realized he was protecting his world from me."

Giovanni closed his eyes, his entire body shaking violently in terror. "Please... please, Vanessa..."

"The Valenti syndicate surrenders all territory north of 95th Street," Vanessa dictated calmly, her tone as precise as a corporate lawyer reading a contract. "You will sign over your commercial port shares to the Moretti Foundation by eight o'clock tomorrow morning. You will take your family and leave the state of Illinois before noon, and if you ever set foot in Chicago again, I won't send Damien's men."

She leaned in closer, her voice dropping into a chilling, soft whisper.

"I will come for you myself."

Giovanni nodded hysterically, tears running down his cheeks. "Yes! Yes! Anything! Just take her away, Damien! Take her away!"

May you like

Damien lowered his submachine gun slightly, looking at his wife with a sense of quiet, overwhelming triumph that thrilled every nerve in his body.

"You heard my wife, Giovanni," Damien said softly. "You have until noon."
