Chapter 9 - The Shadow Council

Two months later.

The subterranean war room beneath the Moretti estate had been completely transformed.

The old, damp concrete walls had been paneled in rich mahogany wood. Advanced encrypted satellite monitors covered the main wall, displaying live tracking feeds of Moretti shipping vessels moving across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

In the center of the room sat a grand round table made of dark walnut.

Seated around the table were the seven highest-ranking captains of the Moretti family—men who controlled the docks, the real estate, the unions, and the political enforcement across three states.

At the head of the table sat Damien.

Sitting directly at his right hand—occupying the seat that had once belonged to the traitor Luca Bellini—was Vanessa.

She wore a dark, tailored charcoal suit, her presence calm, commanding, and absolute. None of the captains questioned her presence anymore. After the swift, bloodless fall of the Valenti syndicate and the total restructuring of the waterfront logistics, every man in the room knew that Vanessa Moretti was the strategic brain behind the family's expanding empire.

"The Detroit syndicate has requested a meeting next Tuesday, Boss," Captain Bruno reported, leaning forward over his tablet. "They want to discuss the new trucking corridors through Indiana."

Damien looked at the map on the main screen, then turned his gaze to Vanessa.

"Vanessa?" Damien asked.

Vanessa tapped her tablet screen, bringing up a financial file on the Detroit leadership.

"Don't meet them in Detroit," Vanessa analyzed smoothly, her voice clear and authoritative. "Their primary lieutenant, Cassio, has been liquidating his personal real estate holdings over the past forty-eight hours. He is preparing a internal coup against his own Don. If you go to Detroit next week, you will be walking into a crossfire."

The captains around the table looked at her in silent, profound admiration.

"What do we do instead, Mrs. Moretti?" Bruno asked respectfully.

"We invite Don Cassio’s superior to our estate on Sunday," Vanessa instructed calmly. "We inform him of his lieutenant's real estate transactions, provide him with the encrypted banking records, and offer him our security team to resolve his internal issue—in exchange for a thirty percent tariff reduction on the Indiana corridor."

Damien sat back in his heavy leather chair, looking around the table at his captains, who were all nodding in eager agreement with his wife's strategy.

"You heard her," Damien commanded, his voice deep and resonant. "Set up the Sunday meeting."

"Yes, Boss! Right away, Mrs. Moretti!" the captains responded in unison, standing up to begin executing their orders.

As the captains filed out of the war room, leaving the heavy mahogany doors to click shut behind them, the room went quiet.

Damien turned his chair toward Vanessa, looking at her with a soft, affectionate smile.

"You just saved us four million dollars and a turf war in Detroit," Damien noticed softly.

"I just saved my Sunday afternoon, darling," Vanessa replied with a light laugh, standing up from her chair and leaning over his desk. "I promised Dr. Mercer we would go riding in the estate park on Sunday."

Damien reached out, catching her by the waist and pulling her down onto his lap.

Vanessa let out a soft gasp as her arms instinctively wrapped around his neck, looking down into his dark, loving eyes.

"You know," Damien rasped softly, his right hand gently tracing the side of her waist, "eleven years ago, I thought Luca was the best partner I could ever have in this business."

May you like

"And now?" Vanessa asked softly, her fingers running through the thick dark hair at the back of his neck.

"And now," Damien whispered, leaning up to kiss her jawline, "I realize I was waiting my whole life for a woman who could cross a ballroom in one heel and conquer an empire before dessert."
