Chapter 5 - Through the Shadows

The night was pitch black, a light drizzle coating the dense pine forests of South Barrington in a cold, shimmering wetness.

Fifty yards from the western boundary wall of the Valenti estate, a sleek black utility van sat parked beneath the heavy canopy of oak trees, its engine off, its lights completely dark.

Inside, the red tactical interior light illuminated four figures gearing up in total silence.

Damien slid a fresh magazine into his suppressed submachine gun, checking the chamber with practiced, automatic ease. Across from him, Vanessa was tightening the straps of her bulletproof vest over her black turtleneck sweater.

She reached down, pulling two sleek, dark tactical knives from her equipment bag, sliding one into her boot holster and the second into a sheath along her ribs.

Damien watched her every movement.

Even now, after everything he had seen tonight, watching her slide a blade into her boot with effortless, lethal grace felt like a fever dream.

"Your shoulder?" Vanessa asked softly, looking up at him.

"It's fine," Damien lied smoothly, adjusting his sling.

Vanessa stepped closer to him, reaching out with her gloved hand to adjust the upper shoulder strap of his tactical vest, tightening it just enough to take the weight off his injured muscle.

"Don't lie to your doctor," she murmured with a faint smile.

Damien caught her hand, holding it against his chest.

"If anything goes wrong in there, Vanessa," Damien whispered, his voice dark and raw with emotion, "you retreat. You don't try to play the hero for me. You get back to the van and drive away."

Vanessa looked at him, her dark eyes reflecting the faint red light of the van.

"Damien," she said gently, "I've survived ambushes in Cairo, firefights in Moscow, and interrogations in Berlin. The only thing in this world that frightens me is the thought of going home to an empty house without you."

Damien’s heart swelled, a fierce, overwhelming warmth crashing through his icy chest. He reached behind her neck, pulled her close, and pressed his lips firmly against hers in a brief, possessive, passionate kiss.

"Let's go kill Giovanni," Damien rasped against her lips.

They stepped out of the rear doors of the van into the cold night rain.

Moving like shadows, the four of them—Damien, Vanessa, Marco, and Dmitri—crossed the muddy treeline, reaching the mouth of the concrete drainage canal where it passed beneath the heavy stone boundary wall.

Vanessa dropped to one knee, examining the cut iron grate.

"Clean," she whispered, signaling with two fingers. "No tripwires, no pressure sensors. Valenti’s security team was lazy."

She slid through the narrow opening first, her body moving through the dark concrete pipe with effortless fluidity. Damien followed right behind her, his large frame barely fitting through the gap, but his movements silent and disciplined.

Ten seconds later, they emerged into the humid, glass-walled interior of Valenti’s private greenhouse.

The air inside smelled of damp earth, tropical orchids, and warm fertilizer. Outside the glass walls, the rain pattered softly against the roof.

Vanessa held up a hand, stopping the team near a cluster of large palm trees.

Through the fogged glass door of the greenhouse, leading into the main courtyard, two Valenti security guards were standing beneath an awning, smoking cigarettes, their automatic rifles slung casually over their shoulders.

Vanessa looked back at Damien. She held up two fingers, then pointed to herself and Damien.

Damien nodded once.

They moved together like two halves of a single killing machine.

Vanessa slipped through the side glass door without making a sound. Before the first guard could even turn his head toward the whisper of the opening door, Vanessa was behind him. Her left arm wrapped tightly around his throat, cutting off his carotid artery, while her right hand drove a knee into the small of his back. He went limp in three seconds, silenced before he could draw a breath.

Simultaneously, Damien stepped out from the shadow of the brick pillar, his heavy right arm locking around the second guard's neck, dragging him back into the darkness of the foliage with brutal, efficient strength.

Both guards were lowered silently to the wet flagstones.

Marco and Dmitri stepped out of the greenhouse, dragging the unconscious men inside to hide the bodies.

Vanessa looked at the grand brick facade of the Valenti mansion twenty yards away.

The second-floor windows of the main study were brightly lit.

"Giovanni is upstairs," Vanessa whispered, pointing to the balcony. "And he just realized his warehouse detonators went offline."
