Chapter 4 - The Strategy Room

By ten o'clock, the situation room on the second floor of the Moretti estate was bustling with activity.

Tactical maps of the Chicago metropolitan area were laid out across the long oak table. Five senior captains—men who had controlled territory for the Moretti family for decades—stood around the table, their faces grim and uncertain.

Sitting at the head of the table was Damien, his shoulder freshly bandaged beneath a black tactical vest.

Standing right beside him, pointing at an aerial satellite map of the Valenti estate in South Barrington, was Vanessa.

The captains were staring at her in absolute bewilderment. Two hours ago, they had known Vanessa Moretti as the soft-spoken, beautiful woman who organized charity galas and smiled politely at dinner parties. Now, she was giving them a masterclass in military-grade siege tactics.

"The Valenti estate is surrounded by an eight-foot brick wall with motion sensors along the northern perimeter," Vanessa said, using a red laser pointer to mark three points on the map. "Their primary security guard force consists of eighteen men, rotating on forty-five-minute shifts."

"How the hell do you know their shift rotations, Mrs. Moretti?" Captain Bruno—a heavy-set man with a scarred face—asked, blinking in disbelief.

"Because I spent twenty minutes analyzing their private security company's public radio frequency three weeks ago while Damien was at a council meeting," Vanessa replied effortlessly. "They use an unencrypted secondary frequency for their perimeter guards."

Bruno looked at Damien, his mouth open. "Boss... did you know about this?"

Damien sat back in his chair, a dark, complex expression on his face. "Just listen to her, Bruno."

"Valenti expects us to send a heavy convoy through his main front gates if we strike," Vanessa continued, sweeping the laser pointer toward the back of the property. "Which is why he has six men stationed near the fountain with heavy anti-vehicle weaponry. If you go through the front, half your men will die in the driveway."

"So how do we get in?" another captain asked.

"Through the drainage canal on the west side," Vanessa said. "It runs beneath the perimeter wall and opens into the private greenhouse forty feet from Valenti’s private study. The steel grate over the canal was cut open six months ago by local teenagers and never repaired."

She turned her gaze to Damien.

"We take a four-person strike team through the canal," Vanessa said. "Silent entry. No heavy vehicles, no sirens. We neutralize Valenti’s inner guard before he even knows his warehouse detonators failed."

Damien stood up slowly, his tall, powerful frame looming over the table.

"A four-person team," Damien rasped, his dark eyes locked onto his wife. "Who are the four?"

"You," Vanessa said instantly. "Dmitri, Marco, and me."

"No," Damien said flatly. His voice was absolute, carrying the immovable weight of a man who had ruled an empire for fifteen years. "Absolutely not."

The room went dead silent. The captains looked down at the table, sensing the dangerous shift in the air.

Vanessa didn't back down. She turned to face her husband, stepping right up to his chest.

"Damien, I know the layout of that house better than anyone in this room," she said quietly.

"You are my wife," Damien gritted out through his teeth, his jaw clenching so hard his muscles stood out like iron cables. "I spent three years keeping you out of the mud, Vanessa. I let you handle Luca down in the cellar because we needed answers fast. But I will not put you on the front line of an assault against Giovanni Valenti!"

"Damien," Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a low, fiercely intense whisper that only he could hear. "You have a gunshot wound in your left shoulder. Your mobility is compromised by twenty percent. If you take an ordinary guard into that estate, he will watch your back like a soldier watching his commander. If you take me, I will watch your back like a woman protecting her life."

Damien stared down into her eyes, his breath hitching in his chest.

The sheer, unadulterated devotion burning behind her dangerous, disciplined gaze struck him harder than any bullet ever could.

She wasn't just a deadly operative. She wasn't just his sweet, civilian wife.

She was his partner—a shadow that had chosen to stand beside his throne, fully capable of burning down anyone who tried to take it from him.

Damien let out a long, slow breath, wiping a hand down his face.

He turned to his captains. "Get the tactical gear ready. We leave in twenty minutes."
