Chapter 4 - The Winter Syndicate

The insult hung in the warm air of the dining room like a toxic fog.
Claire felt a familiar, cold knot form in her stomach. She immediately pulled back from Adrian, reaching for her glasses, her eyes dropping to the glass tabletop. The old, familiar instinct to make herself small, to apologize for occupying space, surged through her.
Adrian didn't pull back.
He didn't move quickly. He slowly turned his head to look at Genevieve Vance. The warmth that had filled his pale grey eyes seconds ago vanished, replaced by a dark, terrifying frost that made even Genevieve take a tiny, involuntary step back.
"Genevieve," Adrian said, his voice low, flat, and carrying the weight of an executioner's blade. "You crossed three security checkpoints without an invitation."
Genevieve forced a stiff, arrogant smile, adjusting the fur collar of her coat. "We have been business partners for five years, Adrian. I don't need an invitation to your penthouse. And I certainly didn't expect to find you sharing breakfast with a pathetic little bookkeeper who looks like she bought her wardrobe from a clearance rack."
Claire bit her lower lip, staring at her laptop screen, her fingers tightening into fists in her lap.
Adrian stood up.
He rose to his full, imposing height, stepping slowly around the glass table until he stood between Genevieve and Claire.
"Ms. Bennett is my honored guest," Adrian said, his baritone dropping into a register that vibrated through the floorboards. "She possesses more intelligence in her pinky finger than you and your entire board of directors combined. If you ever speak to her—or about her—in that tone again, I will terminate your investment firm's access to my port infrastructure by noon."
Genevieve’s face went entirely pale. "Adrian... you can't be serious! She's a nobody!"
"She is everything you are not," Adrian replied coldly. "Marcus, escort Lady Genevieve out of my building. Strip her security clearance for the residential floors."
"Yes, Mr. Vale," Marcus said, stepping forward with two guards.
Genevieve glared at Claire with pure hatred before turning on her heel and stomping out of the penthouse, the heavy doors slamming shut behind her.
Silence returned to the room.
Adrian turned back to Claire. He walked over to her chair, dropping to one knee beside her so his eyes were level with hers.
"Look at me, Claire," he commanded softly.
Claire slowly looked up, her eyes bright with unshed tears of frustration. "She’s right, you know. To people like her... to people in your world... I don't belong here."
"People like her are parasites who confuse expensive clothes with worth," Adrian said fiercely, taking both of her trembling hands in his large, warm palms. "You built a case that defeated a syndicate from a desk in a freight yard. You stood in front of three armed men last night and didn't bow your head. You belong wherever you choose to stand."
Claire stared at him, her heart beating wildly in her chest. "Why are you doing this, Adrian? Why are you protecting me like this?"
Adrian looked at her—at the soft curve of her cheek, the brilliant, sharp intelligence in her hazel eyes, the unyielding strength she kept buried beneath her quiet exterior.
"Because for thirty-four years, I have lived in a world of greedy, loud, disposable people," Adrian murmured, his thumb gently caressing the back of her hand. "And then you walked into my harbor. And I realized I never want to look away from you."
Claire felt a shiver run down her spine—not of fear, but of an overwhelming, terrifying anticipation.
"Tonight," Adrian continued, standing up and pulling her gently to her feet, "is the annual Chicago Merchant Society Winter Gala at the Drake Hotel. Every major figure in the city will be there—including Vanessa Crowe, Genevieve Vance, and thirty syndicate bosses."
Claire blinked. "The Winter Gala?"
"Vanessa believes she can use the gala to rally the other bosses against me after last night's incident," Adrian said, a dark, victorious smile spreading across his lips. "She thinks I am hiding you. She thinks you are my weakness."

He leaned close to her ear, his warm breath sending tingles across her skin.
"Tonight, Claire, we are going to walk into that ballroom together. And we are going to burn her empire to the ground."
