Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Blood

When Adrian finally pulled back from the kiss, Claire’s breath came in ragged, breathless hitches, her cheeks glowing with a dark, radiant pink, her berry-red lipstick softly smeared at the corners of her lips.
Adrian kept one strong arm locked securely around her waist, holding her flushed body flush against his side. He turned his head to glare at Vanessa Crowe and the stunned crowd.
"If anyone in this room ever disrespects Ms. Bennett again," Adrian announced, his voice ringing out like a thunderclap, "I will consider it a formal declaration of war against my house."
Silence hung heavy over the ballroom. No one dared to blink.
Claire, her heart pounding with a thrilling mixture of adrenaline and passion, took a deep breath, stepped slightly forward within Adrian's hold, and cleared her throat.
She looked directly at Vanessa Crowe.
"Speaking of company records, Ms. Crowe," Claire said, her voice clear, steady, and utterly devoid of fear.
She reached into a small velvet clutch hanging from her wrist, pulled out a sleek, encrypted flash drive, and held it up for the room to see.
"At 8:00 p.m. tonight," Claire declared, "my automated encryption script successfully bypassed your secondary firewalls. This drive contains the complete, unredacted transaction logs of Northern Cross Logistics—including the bribe payments made to Chief Inspector Miller, the illegal weapons shipments routed through Pier 4, and the offshore accounts in Montreal."
Vanessa’s face went entirely, ghostly white. "You... you didn't..."
"I did," Claire said smoothly, a cold, victorious smile touching her lips. "And twenty minutes ago, a duplicate copy of this drive was delivered to the Special Investigations Division of the IRS and the United States Attorney’s Office."
Right on cue, the heavy front doors of the Drake Hotel lobby blew open.
A dozen federal agents in blue jackets marked FBI, accompanied by twenty armed Chicago police officers, poured into the ballroom, their weapons drawn.
"Vanessa Crowe!" the lead federal agent shouted, pushing past the stunned socialites. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, weapons smuggling, and enterprise corruption! Put your hands on your head!"
Panic erupted across the far side of the ballroom. Vanessa’s bodyguards attempted to pull their weapons, but Adrian’s tactical team, who had been blending into the crowd in tuxedos, stepped forward instantly, disarming the hitmen and pinning them to the marble floor.
Federal agents swarmed Vanessa, forcing her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
As she was dragged past Adrian and Claire, Vanessa glared at Claire with wild, desperate hatred. "You ruined me! You pathetic little clerk!"

Claire stood tall, resting her head against Adrian’s broad shoulder, her hand intertwined securely with his long fingers.
"I didn't ruin you, Ms. Crowe," Claire said softly as the agents dragged the crying syndicate boss away. "I just audited you."
