Chapter 9 - The Private Citadel

The elevator ride up to the Gold Coast penthouse was silent, charged with a dark, overwhelming tension that made the air inside the small cabin vibrate.
Adrian stood close behind Claire, his chest pressing lightly against her back, his hands resting on her hips over his heavy coat. Every time the elevator chimed past a floor, his breath warm against her neck made her pulse race faster.
When the elevator doors slid open into the quiet, dim foyer of the penthouse, Adrian didn't wait.
He removed his coat from her shoulders, letting it fall to the floor, and swept Claire up into his broad arms, lifting her effortlessly against his chest.
Claire gasped softly, wrapping her arms securely around his neck, resting her forehead against his jaw as he carried her through the darkened penthouse toward his master bedroom suite.
The master bedroom was bathed in the amber light of a roaring marble fireplace. A massive king-sized bed lined with dark silk sheets stood in the center of the room, looking out over the snow-covered skyline through panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass.
Adrian set her down gently beside the bed.
He stood in front of her, unfastening his silk bow tie with long, practiced fingers, pulling it from his collar and dropping it to the rug. He unbuttoned the top three buttons of his crisp white shirt, exposing the powerful muscular lines of his throat and chest.
Claire looked at him, feeling no fear, no hesitation—only an intense, wild desire that she had kept locked away for years.
"Claire," Adrian whispered, his voice low and dark as he reached out to touch the sapphire necklace around her neck. "Are you sure?"
Claire reached up, unclasping the sapphire necklace herself, and let the priceless platinum jewels drop onto the bedside table.
"I have spent my whole life hiding in the shadows, Adrian," Claire murmured, stepping closer until her midnight velvet dress brushed against his trousers. "I'm done hiding."
Adrian let out a low, rough growl, his arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her up against his body as his mouth crashed down on hers.
The kiss was wild, deep, and uninhibited.
Adrian’s hands moved over the heavy velvet of her gown, tracing the lush, soft curve of her hips, pulling her tight against his hard frame. Claire groaned softly into his mouth, her fingers unbuttoning his shirt, pressing her hands against the smooth, warm skin of his chest, feeling his powerful heart hammering against her palms.
He gently reached behind her, unzipping the long zipper of her midnight dress. The heavy blue velvet pooling around her feet on the dark floor, leaving her standing in her delicate lace lingerie.
Adrian stepped back for a single second, his pale eyes blazing as he took in the breathtaking sight of her soft, voluptuous body bathed in the flickering amber light of the fireplace.

"You are stunning, Claire," he growled, his hands coming out to cup her soft waist, pulling her onto the soft silk sheets of the bed. "Completely breathtaking."
That night, surrounded by the quiet snowfall over Chicago, the most feared man in the city loved her with a fierce, reverent intensity that shattered every shadow she had ever lived in.
