Chapter 5 - The Velvet Armor

At 6:00 p.m., two senior stylists and a high-end tailor arrived at the penthouse, carrying four racks of heavy garment bags, cases of fine jewelry, and velvet shoes.
Claire sat in front of the vanity mirror in her bedroom, feeling entirely out of her depth as the stylists worked in quiet, efficient synchronization.
They didn't try to change who she was. Following Adrian’s explicit, strict instructions, they didn't paint her skin in heavy makeup or force her into an uncomfortable corset. Instead, they enhanced her natural beauty. Her thick brown hair was washed, styled into soft, elegant waves that fell over her shoulders in rich dark chocolate ribbons. Her hazel eyes were subtly lined, highlighting their warm gold flecks, and her lips were painted a deep, classic berry red.
Then came the dress.
It was a custom gown designed by an elite Italian fashion house—crafted from heavy, midnight-blue velvet that matched the color of the Lake Michigan sky at dusk.
It had long, fitted sleeves, a modest off-the-shoulder neckline that exposed her collarbones, and a tailored bodice that hugged her soft hips and full waist before flowing down to a dramatic floor-length train. It exposed no excessive skin, yet the heavy silk velvet clung to every curve of her body with a devastating, regal elegance.
When Claire stepped in front of the full-length mirror, she gasped softly.
The woman looking back at her was not an invisible, hunched-over auditor. She was breathtaking. The dark velvet set off her pale skin, the cut highlighted her voluptuous figure with proud, dramatic beauty, and the soft waves of her hair framed a face that radiated quiet, dangerous power.
She didn't put on her glasses; instead, she placed soft contact lenses into her eyes, making her hazel gaze appear wide, bright, and striking.
There was a soft knock at her bedroom door.
"Claire?" Adrian’s deep voice called out.
"Come in," she said, her voice shaking slightly with anticipation.
The door opened. Adrian stepped inside, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo cut with sharp, uncompromising precision. A black silk bow tie sat against his crisp white shirt, emphasizing the width of his shoulders and his tall, lethal silhouette.
He stopped three steps inside the room.
His pale grey eyes swept down over her—taking in the midnight velvet, the soft curves of her waist, the dark waves of her hair, and her berry-red lips.
The undisputed ruler of Chicago stood entirely speechless.
For five long seconds, the silence in the bedroom was absolute.
"Adrian?" Claire whispered, suddenly feeling nervous, her hands fidgeting with the fabric of her skirt. "Is it too much? I can change—"
"Don't," Adrian said instantly.
The word came out rough, heavy with an intense, raw emotion he couldn't mask. He walked slowly across the plush carpet until he stood directly in front of her. Up close, his eyes were blazing with a dark, terrifying fire.
"You look..." Adrian swallowed hard, his jaw clenching as he struggled to find words. "...you look divine, Claire. Absolutely divine."
Claire felt a wave of heat wash over her face, a radiant smile breaking across her red lips. "Thank you. You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Vale."
A faint, wicked smile touched Adrian's lips. He reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a long velvet box. He opened it to reveal a vintage sapphire and diamond necklace—a breathtaking arrangement of deep blue gems set in white platinum.
"This belonged to my grandmother," Adrian murmured, stepping behind her. "She was the only woman in my family who understood what real power meant."
He lifted the heavy necklace, placing it gently against the cool skin of her neck. His long fingers brushed against her collarbone as he fastened the platinum clasp, sending a thrilling jolt of electricity straight down her spine.
Claire looked in the mirror, watching Adrian step up behind her, his hands coming down to rest lightly on her waist. His tall, broad frame towered over her, his dark reflection contrasting stunningly with her midnight blue velvet.
"Tonight, everyone in that ballroom will be watching us," Adrian whispered near her ear, his hands squeezing her waist gently. "They will try to intimidate you. They will try to make you feel small."
Claire turned in his arms, placing her small hands against the crisp white front of his tuxedo shirt, looking up into his pale grey eyes with absolute, unyielding courage.
"Let them try," Claire said softly. "I have the numbers. And I have you."
May you like
Adrian stared down at her, a look of fierce, dark pride flooding his features.
"Yes, you do," he whispered. "Now let's go show Chicago who really owns this city."
