Chapter 6 - The Ballroom of Wolves

The Drake Hotel's Grand Ballroom was a glittering palace of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and marble pillars.
Tonight, three hundred of the Midwest's most powerful people gathered beneath the arched ceilings—politicians, federal judges, shipping magnates, and thirty senior syndicate bosses who controlled everything from the docks to the gambling dens.
The air was thick with the scent of expensive champagne, roasted meats, and continuous, soft classical string music.
At 8:30 p.m., the massive double oak doors at the top of the grand marble staircase swung open.
The room didn't just grow quiet; it went completely, utterly silent.
Adrian Vale stood at the top of the stairs. His expression was a mask of cold, lethal arrogance, his posture commanding absolute authority.
Positioned securely at his side, her hand resting gracefully on his forearm, was Claire Bennett.
A collective murmur rippled through the ballroom like an electric shock.
Socialites leaned in to whisper behind diamond-encrusted gloves. Syndicate bosses narrowed their eyes, trying to identify the stunning, voluptuous woman in midnight velvet walking alongside Chicago's most feared man.
Claire kept her head held high, her spine straight, her red lips set in a serene, confident curve. She felt the heavy weight of three hundred pairs of eyes on her, but the solid heat of Adrian’s arm beneath her hand anchored her completely.
As they descended the grand staircase, small clusters of guests parted like the Red Sea, making a wide path for Adrian.
Standing near the central bar was Lady Genevieve Vance, dressed in a sparkling silver gown. Beside her stood Vanessa Crowe—looking sleek, dangerous, and sharp in a white silk tuxedo suit, flanked by four broad-shouldered security guards whose jackets bulged subtly at the waist.
When Vanessa saw Claire walking beside Adrian—wearing a diamond-and-sapphire necklace worth millions—her face transformed into a mask of pure, vicious fury.
"Adrian," Vanessa said, her sharp voice cutting through the hushed room as she stepped forward to intercept them in the center of the ballroom. "I didn't expect you to bring a thief to the Merchant Gala."
The entire ballroom held its breath. The string quartet stopped playing.
Adrian stopped three feet away from Vanessa, his hand covering Claire’s hand on his arm, holding her close to his side.
"Watch your tongue, Vanessa," Adrian warned softly, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. "You are addressing Ms. Claire Bennett, the Chief Financial Auditor of my combined port operations."
Vanessa let out a sharp, bitter laugh, looking Claire up and down with open disgust. "Chief Financial Auditor? She’s a traitorous little bookkeeper who stole private company records from my freight offices!"
Genevieve Vance stepped up beside Vanessa, sneering at Claire. "Look at her, Vanessa. She put on a blue dress and some borrowed jewels, but she's still just a fat, pathetic little clerk who spent eighteen months hiding in a drafty freight yard. She doesn't belong in this room. She belongs in a jail cell!"
The insult was loud, deliberate, and designed to humiliate Claire in front of every major figure in Chicago.
Claire felt the blood rush to her face, but before she could speak, Adrian moved.
He stepped directly in front of Claire, shielding her with his broad frame, his grey eyes flashing with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage that made the temperature in the ballroom drop to absolute zero.
Three of Vanessa's bodyguards instantly reached inside their jackets, their hands gripping the handles of their concealed weapons.
Adrian didn't draw a gun. He looked down at Genevieve and Vanessa as if they were insects beneath his boot.
"You think she doesn't belong here?" Adrian asked, his velvet voice vibrating through the crystal chandeliers. "You think she is small?"
He turned slowly to look at Claire.
The lethal rage in his eyes vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, breathtaking warmth that silenced every person in the room.
He reached out, taking Claire's face in his large hands, his thumb gently brushing over her red lipstick.
"You're sleeping beside me tonight," Adrian said, his voice loud enough for every boss, politician, and socialite in the ballroom to hear.
Claire’s heart stopped dead in her chest. Her hazel eyes widened.
Before anyone could comprehend what was happening, Adrian leaned down and kissed her.
It was not a soft, tentative kiss. It was a deep, possessive, breathtaking kiss that claimed her completely in front of the entire city of Chicago. His lips were firm, warm, and demanding, pulling her against his broad chest until her curves pressed flat against his tuxedo.
Claire gasped into his mouth, her hands instinctively flying up to wrap around his neck, sinking her fingers into his dark hair, giving herself entirely to the kiss.

The entire ballroom gasped.
Three syndicate bosses dropped their champagne glasses, the crystal shattering against the marble floor. Vanessa Crowe stood frozen, her mouth open in absolute horror, realizing in a single terrifying second that Claire Bennett was not Adrian Vale’s asset—she was his queen.
