Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW ON THE BALCONY

As Elena approached the perimeter fence, the tension in the yard reached a boiling point. Two guards attempted to throw a thick woven lead over Midnight’s neck, but the stallion pivoted instantly, his hind hooves striking the posts with enough force to send splinters flying through the air.

"Get back, lady!" the younger guard shouted, wiping blood from a cut above his brow. "He’ll crush you before you even see him coming!"

Owen Cain turned sharply, his face tightening when he noticed Elena standing mere feet from the latch. "Ma'am! You are in an active danger zone. Return to the main house immediately."

Elena did not step back. She kept her right hand deep inside her apron pocket, feeling the small, square form of the sugar cube warming between her fingers. Her voice was remarkably steady, despite the trembling in her limbs.

"You're surrounding him like hunters," Elena said, looking directly into Owen’s eyes. "Every time you step forward, you give him no choice but to fight back."

"That is a twelve-hundred-pound stallion with an unstable temperament," Owen replied, taking a step toward her to block her path. "He has injured three men in less than ten minutes. Step away from the gate."

"He isn't unstable," she said quietly. "He's exhausted. Look at his ears."

Owen paused for a fraction of a second, glancing over his shoulder. Midnight had stopped his charge, standing near the center of the ring. His sides were heaving violently, foam dripping from his muzzle onto the trampled dirt. His ears flicked back and forth rapidly, searching for a way out, catching the sound of distant traffic, shouting men, and the metallic click of heavy gear.

Up on the limestone terrace, Alessandro Salvatore observed the exchange. He raised a hand slightly, signaling his second-in-command on the balcony to withhold the tranquilizer request. His gaze narrowed, locking onto the diminutive figure of the pregnant maid standing at the edge of the dust cloud.

Elena did not wait for formal permission. While Owen’s attention drifted to the radio at his belt, her fingers unlatched the heavy iron bolt of the side gate.

The metallic slide of the latch clicked sharply in the morning air.

"What are you doing?!" Owen shouted, turning back, his hand extending instinctively to grab her arm, but stopping short when he saw her physical state. "Stop her!"

The guards froze. Elena slipped through the narrow opening, stepping directly into the open paddock.

The gate clicked shut behind her.

The air inside the enclosure felt thick with heat, dust, and the sharp scent of sweat and blood. The ground beneath her worn shoes was uneven, rutted by heavy hooves. Elena took a deep breath, resting her left hand gently over her swollen abdomen, supporting the weight of her child.

In the center of the ring, Midnight’s head snapped upward.

His dark eyes locked onto her instantly.
