Chapter 8 - THE STORMBREAKER

Over the next two weeks, the dynamic on the Salvatore estate shifted subtly. Elena was given total freedom over the barn complex. Under her calm, structured care, Midnight underwent a dramatic transformation. The stallion’s aggressive outbursts ceased entirely; he learned to walk calmly alongside her on a lead rope, responding to her quiet voice and steady hand.

Alessandro spent increasing amounts of time at the stables. He watched Elena work with the horse from the shade of the wooden porch, occasionally joining her for short walks along the edge of the vineyards. Despite the vast difference in their social status, a quiet mutual respect began to form between them.

However, the peace was shattered on a Tuesday afternoon when a violent summer storm rolled over the Napa hills. Dark clouds swallowed the sky, pouring heavy rain over the estate and bringing sharp bursts of lightning and deafening thunder.

In the midst of the storm, a convoy of black SUVs pulled unannounced through the main security gates.

Owen Cain immediately alerted all security teams to fall back to the main residence. The visitors were high-ranking members of a rival syndicate—the very group from whom Alessandro had acquired Midnight two months prior. Their leader, a broad-shouldered man named Victor Moretti, stepped out into the rain surrounded by four heavily armed bodyguards.

Inside the stable, Elena was securing the stalls as the thunder shook the wooden beams above. Midnight was visibly anxious, tossing his head as the roaring storm raged outside.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the barn slid open.

Victor Moretti walked in, wiping rain from his leather coat, followed by two of his men. Alessandro Salvatore stepped in behind them, accompanied by Owen Cain. The tension between the two leaders was palpable, sharp enough to cut through the heavy air.

"So this is where you're keeping him, Alessandro," Victor said, his voice deep and raspy as he approached Midnight’s stall. "You took him from my estate in Italy, claiming he was part of the settlement. But a beast like this belongs to someone who knows how to break him."

Victor reached out a heavy, gloved hand to grab Midnight’s halter roughly through the iron bars.

Midnight let out a sharp, furious squeal, rearing back inside his stall, his hooves slamming against the wooden walls.

"Don't touch him!" Elena shouted, stepping immediately between Victor and the stall door, her eyes flashing with anger.

Victor stopped, looking down at the small, pregnant woman standing defiantly in front of him with genuine astonishment. "What is this, Alessandro? You have domestic help running your stables now?"
