Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT WATCH

Night fell over the Napa Valley, bringing a cool breeze that rustled the leaves of the vast vineyards. The estate transformed under the cover of darkness; floodlights illuminated the perimeter fences, and armed guards patrolled the grounds with trained guard dogs.

Elena found it difficult to sleep in her new quarters at the east cottage. The room was spacious and comfortable, far better than anything she had occupied since leaving Montana, but her mind was restless. Her baby was active, kicking repeatedly, and a strange sense of foreboding hung in the cool air.

At 2:00 AM, driven by a quiet instinct, Elena pulled on a thick wool cardigan and walked out toward the stable complex.

The main barn was quiet, lit only by low orange safety lights along the central aisle. The scent of sweet hay and pine shavings filled the air. As she approached Midnight’s stall, she noticed a shadow moving near the far side of the barn.

She stopped instantly, retreating behind a wooden support pillar.

A man was standing outside Midnight’s enclosure. In his hand, he held a dark metallic syringe. Midnight was restless, stepping from side to side in his stall, snorting softly as the intruder approached the door.

It was not Owen Cain. It was one of the younger security guards—the one who had been injured during the morning incident, his brow still covered with a white bandage.

"Quiet, you beast," the guard muttered under his breath, raising the needle as he reached for the stall latch. "Let's see how calm you are after this."

"Stop right there!" Elena’s voice cut through the silent barn like a whip.

The guard jumped, dropping the syringe into the straw as he spun around. His face flushed with panic when he saw Elena stepping out into the dim light.

"What are you doing in here?!" the guard hissed, recovering his posture and stepping toward her aggressively. "This is a restricted area at night. Get back to your quarters!"

"You're holding a chemical sedative," Elena said, her eyes dropping to the small glass vial shining in the straw near his boots. "Mr. Salvatore gave strict instructions that no unauthorized substances were to be used on this horse."

"That horse almost broke my neck this morning!" the guard snarled, taking another step closer to her, his voice trembling with anger. "I'm not going to let some pregnant nobody ruin my standing here. Keep your mouth shut, maid."

"He won't have to," a deep, quiet voice echoed from the main entrance of the barn.

The guard froze instantly.

Alessandro Salvatore walked out of the shadows, flanked by Owen Cain.
