Chapter 5 - RIPPLES IN THE HOUSEHOLD

By noon, news of the incident in the main paddock had spread throughout the entirety of the Salvatore estate.
In the staff dining quarters, murmurs filled the room as Elena entered to collect her personal belongings from her locker. The domestic staff—women and men who had barely acknowledged her existence over the past three weeks—now watched her with a mixture of awe and apprehension. In a household where staying invisible was the primary strategy for survival, drawing the direct attention of Alessandro Salvatore was considered both a blessing and a dangerous liability.
Sofia, a senior housekeeper who had been at the estate for over a decade, approached Elena with a tray containing a warm meal and a glass of fresh juice.
"You should sit down, child," Sofia said gently, guiding Elena to a wooden bench. "You look pale."
"I'm just tired, Sofia," Elena admitted, leaning back against the wall with a sigh of relief as the pressure left her feet. "Everything happened so quickly."
"You don't understand what you did this morning," Sofia said in a hushed tone, checking to make sure the other staff members were out of earshot. "Mr. Salvatore does not change his mind easily. Midnight was brought here two months ago from an auction in Europe. He belonged to a rival family before... well, before circumstances changed. That horse has been a symbol for Mr. Salvatore. To see him tamed by anyone, let alone an unannounced maid, has set people talking."
Elena frowned slightly. "A rival family?"
Sofia placed a hand on Elena’s arm, her voice dropping lower. "Ask no questions about where things come from in this house, Elena. You know the rules. But know this: Owen Cain is not pleased. He feels his security team was made to look foolish in front of the boss. Be careful."
Later that afternoon, Owen Cain himself arrived at the stables where Elena was settling Midnight into a spacious, well-ventilated box stall. The raw wounds on the horse’s neck had been treated with soothing salve, and he was calmly eating fresh alfalfa.
Owen stood at the entrance of the barn, his arms crossed over his chest. His expression was cold and guarded.
"Your new contract details have been processed," Owen said, handing her a folder. "You'll receive a private room in the east cottage starting tonight. No more shared dormitories."
"Thank you, Mr. Cain," Elena said softly.
Owen stepped closer, looking over the stall door at Midnight. "Don't mistake luck for skill, Miss Torres. That horse is unpredictable. If anything happens to you on this property, it becomes my liability. The boss gave you this position because he values results, but if that animal steps out of line again, I won't hesitate to use sedatives, regardless of your methods."

"I understand your position, Mr. Cain," Elena replied calmly, meeting his stern gaze without flinching. "But as long as I am managing him, we won't need weapons."
Owen studied her for a long moment, then turned on his heel and walked away into the fading afternoon light.
