Chapter 4 - THE MASTER’S SCRUTINY

Five minutes passed in complete stillness. Elena stayed beside Midnight, gently running her hand along his shoulder, avoiding the tender, swollen welts caused by the ropes. The stallion’s heavy, frantic breathing gradually slowed into a calm, rhythmic pattern.
Owen Cain finally stepped forward, moving with extreme caution, signaling his men to lower their gear. "Clear the perimeter," Owen ordered softly into his lapel microphone. "Get the medical team to look at Miller and Vance. Stand down."
The guards retreated quietly, glancing back over their shoulders in utter disbelief at the sight of the small, pregnant domestic worker standing beside the estate's most dangerous animal.
A heavy footstep sounded on the stone path leading down from the terrace.
Alessandro Salvatore approached the paddock. He moved with a measured, deliberate grace that commanded instant authority. His jaw was tight, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Elena. Owen immediately stood to attention as his employer stopped at the wooden gate.
"Mr. Salvatore," Owen began, his voice tense. "We were preparing to deploy non-lethal sedatives when—"
"Quiet, Owen," Alessandro said calmly. His voice was deep, laced with a smooth, firm accent.
He opened the gate himself and stepped into the ring. Midnight twitched slightly at the sound of his master’s boots, but Elena kept her hand firmly against the horse's neck, humming a low, wordless melody she remembered from her childhood. The horse remained grounded, resting his muzzle near her hip.
Alessandro stopped three feet away. Up close, his presence was overwhelming. He possessed the sharp features and cold focus of a man accustomed to total obedience. Yet, as he looked at Elena, his expression held something rare: genuine intrigue.
"What is your name?" Alessandro asked.
Elena straightened her back as much as her aching frame permitted, keeping one hand on Midnight. "Elena. Elena Torres, sir."
"How long have you worked here, Elena?"
"Three weeks, sir. In the domestic detail, west wing."
Alessandro glanced down at her simple uniform, her worn canvas shoes, and then at her prominent bump. "You are close to your term."
"Eight months, sir," she replied evenly, looking him in the eye.
"Twelve trained security personnel, men with military backgrounds, could not bring this animal under control," Alessandro said, his eyes shifting back to Midnight, who remained remarkably calm. "They used ropes, catch-poles, and physical leverage. You walked in here with a piece of sugar and no protection. Why?"
Elena took a breath, feeling the weight of his attention. "Because force doesn't work on something that's already terrified, Mr. Salvatore. Your men were fighting his body. He was trying to protect his life. When you give a horse a choice instead of a demand, he stops fighting."
Alessandro remained silent for a long moment. He looked at the horse, then at the blood lingering in the dirt from his injured guards.
"You have ranching experience," Alessandro stated, it being more of a declaration than a question.
"My family worked livestock in Montana," she said simply. "I learned from my father."
Alessandro nodded slowly. He stepped closer, reaching out a gloved hand toward Midnight. The horse snorted softly but did not pull away. "Owen," Alessandro called without turning around.
"Yes, sir?"
"Reassign Elena Torres effective immediately," Alessandro said firmly. "She is no longer part of the general house staff. She is to be given full authority over the stable management and Midnight’s care."
Elena blinked in surprise. "Sir, I was hired for house cleaning. I am not looking for a promotion—"

"You have accomplished in ten minutes what thousands of dollars in professional training failed to achieve," Alessandro interrupted, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute finality. "You will be compensated accordingly. Double her current pay, Owen. Ensure she has proper medical oversight for her pregnancy."
Before Elena could respond, Alessandro turned and walked back toward the main house, leaving a trail of stunned silence behind him.
