Chapter 10 - The Legacy

Six months later, the grounds of the Romano estate were alive with the vibrant colors of summer.
Red roses bloomed along the stone walkways, and the grand fountains sprayed clear water into the warm afternoon air. The heavy iron gates were thrown open, admitting over two hundred guests dressed in elegant formal wear.
It was the day of the Romano wedding.
The grand lawn overlooking Lake Michigan had been transformed into an open-air sanctuary. White silk runners stretched across the emerald grass, framed by thousands of white orchids and candles glowing in glass lanterns.
At the altar stood Matteo Romano, looking devastatingly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. Beside him stood Marcus as his best man, along with senior capos who looked on with genuine pride and respect.
The string quartet began to play a soft, regal melody.
The guests stood up, turning their heads toward the rear terrace.
Clare appeared at the top of the stone steps, supported by Dr. Miller, who had proudly offered to walk her down the aisle in place of her late father.
She was a vision of breathtaking beauty. She wore a custom-designed lace gown that flowed smoothly over her soft curves, a long veil trailing behind her like a cloud. Around her neck rested a simple, stunning diamond pendant—a personal gift from Matteo on the morning of the wedding.
She walked down the white runner with absolute grace, her eyes locked entirely onto the tall, dark man waiting for her at the end of the aisle.
Matteo watched her approach, his heart pounding against his ribs with a force he had never experienced in his entire life. The cold, unyielding mob boss had completely vanished, replaced by a man filled with profound love, awe, and devotion.
When she reached the altar, Dr. Miller placed her hand gently into Matteo’s.
"Take care of her, son," the old doctor whispered softly.
"With my life," Matteo replied without a second of hesitation.
The ceremony was brief, beautiful, and deeply moving. Under the warm summer sun and the blue expanse of Lake Michigan, Matteo Romano and Clare Morgan exchanged vows of eternal loyalty, love, and protection.
"I pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant declared warmly. "You may kiss the bride."
Matteo didn't wait. He stepped forward, wrapped his strong arms around Clare’s waist, and lifted her slightly as he pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss.
The crowd erupted into resounding applause and cheers. Frank, Marcus, and the old capos clapped fiercely, their faces beaming with joy, while Mrs. Gable wiped happy tears from her eyes near the front row.
When Matteo pulled back, he looked down at his new wife, his eyes shining with pure happiness.
"Mrs. Romano," he whispered softly against her lips.
"Mr. Romano," she smiled back, her cheeks glowing with love.
Hand in hand, they turned to face their guests, stepping down the aisle together as husband and wife.
They walked past the high stone walls of the mansion—walls that had once seemed like a prison to a humble housekeeper, but had now become the fortress of a queen.
Later that evening, as the stars filled the dark summer sky over the lake, Matteo and Clare stood together on the private balcony of the second-floor suite where their journey had truly begun.
Matteo stood behind her, his arms wrapped securely around her waist, his chin resting gently on her shoulder. They watched the moonlight dance across the quiet water of Lake Michigan.
"Are you happy, my love?" Matteo asked softly, kissing her cheek.
Clare rested her head back against his chest, placing her hands over his, feeling the heavy gold wedding band resting against her finger.
"I have never been happier," she whispered, looking out at the calm, peaceful night. "We built a home out of the shadows, Matteo."
May you like
"No," Matteo corrected her gently, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her lips. "You brought the light into my home, Clare. And as long as I draw breath, no shadow will ever touch you again."
Together, locked in a tight, unbreakable embrace, they looked out over their empire—a life forged in loyalty, protected by steel, and crowned with everlasting love.
