Chapter 4 - The Unseen Thread

By the time Matteo returned to the Gold Coast mansion, it was past three in the morning.
The house was dark, shrouded in the quiet hush that usually preceded dawn. The security team at the gate checked his vehicle with their usual military efficiency, entirely unaware that the man driving the car was carrying a revelation that would shatter the foundation of their organization.
Matteo walked up the grand staircase, his heavy boots making no sound on the thick runners.
Instead of heading to his personal quarters on the third floor, he stopped at the door of the second-floor guest suite. He stood outside in the dark corridor for a long moment, listening to the silence within.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out the master key, and unlocked the door with a quiet, imperceptible twist.
The room was bathed in the soft, silver glow of the moonlight streaming through the grand arched windows.
Clare was asleep on the king-sized bed. She was curled on her side, her dark hair scattered across the white pillows, her bandaged foot resting comfortably atop a folded blanket. Her breathing was steady, slow, and deep—the breathing of someone who believed she was safe behind the high walls of a fortress.
Matteo stepped inside, closing the door soundlessly behind him.
He walked over to the side of the bed and sat down in the velvet chair beside her. He leaned his elbows on his knees, clasping his hands together as he watched her sleep.
In the brutal world he inhabited, vulnerability was a fatal flaw. He had spent his entire adult life eliminating weaknesses, cutting away anything that could be used as leverage against him. He had refused marriage, kept his personal life completely detached from his business, and treated every relationship as a transaction.
And yet, watching Clare Morgan sleep in his guest room, he felt a strange, terrifying shift inside his chest.
She was not a mobster's daughter. She had no powerful family to protect her, no wealth to buy security. She was simply a woman who worked hard, kept her head down, and possessed an innate, fierce dignity that had captivated him from the moment she had walked into his home three years ago.
She stirred slightly, her eyelids fluttering open as the shadows in the room shifted.
When she saw the dark silhouette sitting beside her bed, she didn't scream. She didn't flinch. She simply blinked slowly, recognizing him instantly in the moonlight.
"Matteo?" she murmured, her voice thick with sleep.
"I'm here," he whispered softly.
She pushed herself up onto her elbows, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand. "What time is it?"
"Past three."
"Did you find them?" she asked, her voice instantly turning sharp with concern. "The men who followed me?"
Matteo looked at her pale face in the moonlight. He didn't want to burden her with the terrifying truth—that the man who had orchestrated her assault was sleeping in the suite at the opposite end of the hallway.
"We found one of them," Matteo said quietly.
"And?"
"He will never come near you again," Matteo promised, his tone so absolute that Clare felt a shiver run down her spine.
She leaned back against the headboard, pulling the duvet up over her lap. "You look tired, Matteo."
It was the first time she had dropped the formal title without being prompted. The name felt natural on her lips, smooth and sweet.
Matteo offered a quiet, weary smile. "I am tired, Clare. More tired than I have been in a very long time."
"What happened tonight?" she asked softly, reaching out her hand across the white duvet.
For a moment, Matteo stared at her small, pale hand. Then, slowly, he reached out and took it in his own, holding her fingers gently within his large, calloused grip. The simple contact felt like a lifeline pulling him out of a dark sea.
"I learned that trust is a very expensive illusion," he said softly, his dark eyes locked onto hers.
Clare felt her heart ache for him. She didn't know the intricacies of his business, but she knew the weight of betrayal. She squeezed his fingers gently. "Not everyone is lying to you, Matteo."
He looked at her hand wrapped in his, then raised his gaze to meet her soft eyes. "I know. You aren't."
He leaned forward, bringing his face closer to hers in the moonlight. The atmosphere in the quiet room shifted dramatically, turning thick with an undeniable, electric tension that made both of their breaths catch in their throats.
"Clare," he whispered, his free hand reaching up to gently cup the side of her neck, his thumb resting against her fluttering pulse. "If I ask you to stay here—not just for a few days, but permanently—what would you say?"
Clare’s breath hitched. She looked into his dark, soulful eyes and saw no mob boss, no cold killer, no wealthy recluse. She saw a man who was fiercely protective, deeply lonely, and entirely devoted to keeping her safe.
"I would say..." she whispered, her voice barely audible above the quiet hum of the night air, "...that I don't want to go anywhere else."
Matteo closed his eyes for a brief second, letting out a long, shuddering breath. When he opened them again, they were filled with an intense, unyielding resolve.
He leaned in and gently pressed his lips against hers.
The kiss was soft, sweet, and filled with a quiet reverence that brought tears to Clare’s eyes. She melted into his touch, her hand sliding up his arm to rest against his strong shoulder, accepting the quiet warmth he offered.

When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, his warm breath fanning across her lips.
"Sleep now, my sweet girl," he whispered softly. "Tomorrow, I clean this house."
