Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan in cold shades of grey and bruised purple.

By seven in the morning, the Romano mansion was bustling with silent activity. Security guards walked the perimeter with trained attack dogs, while the kitchen staff prepared breakfast in the lower level.

Inside Matteo’s study, the air was cold.

Matteo sat behind his desk, fully dressed in a sharp black suit. Across from him sat Marcus, his head of security, along with two of the most loyal capos in the organization—men who had served Matteo’s father thirty years ago.

"Are you absolute certain about Adrian, boss?" one of the older capos, Frank, asked in a low, gravelly voice. "He's your uncle's son. He’s lived in this house since he was sixteen."

"The phone logs don't lie, Frank," Marcus interjected, tossing a thick stack of printed records onto the desk. "The satellite line Adrian carries was pinged thirty seconds after the assault on Miss Morgan. And the financial logs show three offshore transfers from a New York dummy account into a private bank in the Cayman Islands registered under Adrian’s mother’s maiden name."

Frank let out a low curse, shaking his head in disbelief. "The rat was selling our shipping routes to the New York families."

"He was doing more than that," Matteo said quietly, his voice cutting through the room like a steel blade. "He was preparing to eliminate me. He used Miss Morgan as a test to see if our internal security was monitoring staff movements, or if he could use her to plant wiretaps in my study."

"What are your orders, Matteo?" Marcus asked, his hand resting near his sidearm.

Matteo looked out the high window toward the misty gardens. His expression was completely blank—the face of a judge preparing to deliver a final sentence.

"Adrian has called a family council meeting for eleven o'clock today in the main dining room," Matteo said calmly. "He thinks he is going to present evidence that New York is planning an attack on our docks. He wants to convince the senior members to move our operations outside the city so he can ambush us on the road."

"We take him down before eleven," Frank suggested grimly.

"No," Matteo countered smoothly. "Let him hold his meeting. Let him bring his men into the house. I want every single traitor in our network inside this building when the door shuts."

"What about Miss Morgan?" Marcus asked with deep concern. "If things go loud, she could be in danger."

"Miss Morgan will remain in the second-floor suite with three armed men outside her door," Matteo commanded. "Marcus, you will personally guard her room. If anyone attempts to enter that floor without my express permission, kill them instantly."

"Understood, boss."

At nine in the morning, Clare woke to the sound of soft knocking on her door.

Mrs. Gable entered carrying a silver breakfast tray, accompanied by Marcus, who stepped inside the room to quickly inspect the window locks and the balcony door.

"Is everything alright, Marcus?" Clare asked, sitting up in bed and adjusting her dark robe.

"Everything is fine, Miss Morgan," Marcus replied with a tight, professional smile. "Mr. Romano just wants us to take extra precautions today. We have a few business guests arriving shortly."

Clare looked at Mrs. Gable, who was setting the tray down on her bedside table. The older housekeeper’s hands were trembling slightly, her face unusually pale.

"Mrs. Gable?" Clare asked gently. "Are you okay?"

"I am fine, my dear," the old woman whispered, leaning down to squeeze Clare’s hand. "Just... stay in this room today. No matter what sounds you hear in the hallway, do not open that door."

Clare’s chest tightened with a sudden, overwhelming wave of anxiety. She looked toward the window, watching the heavy rain begin to lash against the glass once more.

Downstairs, the heavy iron gates opened to admit four sleek black sedans.

Adrian Romano stepped out onto the driveway, wearing a tailored black overcoat. Behind him walked eight men—security guards hired specifically by Adrian over the past six months, men who were loyal to his paycheck rather than the family legacy.

Adrian adjusted his cufflinks, a calm, arrogant smile playing on his lips as he walked up the stone steps toward the front doors.

He believed today was the day he would finally take control of the Romano empire. He believed Matteo was blind, distracted by a injured maid and minor supply disruptions. He believed he was stepping into a trap of his own making.

He had no idea that the predator sitting on the third floor had already drawn the net tight around his neck.
