Chapter 9 - The Sovereign

Two weeks passed, bringing the heavy snowfall of mid-winter to the streets of Chicago.
The city was wrapped in a thick blanket of white, Lake Michigan freezing along the shoreline into jagged plates of ice. Inside the Romano mansion, life had returned to a smooth, elegant routine—though everything about the household had fundamentally shifted.
Clare’s ankle had fully healed, but she no longer carried silver trays or organized linens.
She sat at the head of the breakfast table in the sunlit morning room, wearing a cream cashmere sweater that Matteo had ordered for her from Milan. Across from her sat Matteo, reading the morning financial papers while sipping his espresso.
Their relationship was no longer a secret kept behind locked doors.
The entire staff, from Mrs. Gable to the perimeter guards, treated Clare with deep, unyielding respect. She was no longer Miss Morgan the housekeeper; she was the woman who sat beside Matteo Romano, the woman whose safety he prioritized above all empire business.
"The snow is getting heavy," Clare observed softly, looking out the grand window at the white flakes swirling across the gardens.
Matteo set his paper down, offering her a warm, devoted smile. "The plows have already cleared the driveway. But if you want to stay inside today, we can turn on the fireplace in the library."
"I'd like that," she smiled.
A soft knock sounded at the door, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a leather folder. He bowed his head respectfully to Clare before turning to Matteo.
"Boss, the New York families have officially withdrawn their representatives from the lakefront district," Marcus reported smoothly. "After news reached them of Adrian's exile and the liquidation of their local cells, Vincent Moretti personally sent a formal message requesting a non-aggression pact."
Matteo took a slow sip of his espresso. "Tell Moretti I will consider his request if he surrenders all commercial leases along the eastern river dock within forty-eight hours."
"Understood, boss," Marcus nodded, a faint, satisfied grin touching his face. "I'll deliver the terms immediately."
As Marcus exited, Clare looked at Matteo with a quiet curiosity. "Is it really over?"
Matteo pushed his chair back, walked around the table, and stood behind her chair. He rested his hands gently on her shoulders, leaning down to kiss the side of her neck.
"It is over, my love," he whispered against her soft skin. "Our boundaries are secure. No one will ever threaten this house—or you—again."
Clare turned her head, resting her cheek against his chest. "I used to think this house was a dark place, Matteo. When I first started working here, I was afraid of the quiet. I was afraid of you."
Matteo run his fingers softly through her dark hair. "And now?"
"Now," she whispered, looking up into his dark, soulful eyes, "I realize the quiet was just you keeping the world from hurting the people inside."
Matteo looked down at her pale, beautiful face, feeling an overwhelming wave of gratitude and love fill his heart. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
Clare’s breath hitched.
Matteo dropped to one knee beside her chair on the warm hardwood floor—the same posture he had taken weeks ago when he had inspected her bruised ankle. But this time, his face was filled with infinite warmth and profound hope.
He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a magnificent, flawless emerald ring surrounded by a delicate halo of diamonds.
"Clare," Matteo said softly, his deep voice trembling slightly with genuine emotion. "You walked into this house three years ago as a stranger. You stood by me when my own blood tried to tear this life apart. You gave me a home when I only had an empire."
He took her hand, his fingers warm and steady against hers.
"Will you marry me, Clare? Will you stay by my side as my wife, my equal, and the sovereign of this house?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy filled Clare’s eyes, glistening like diamonds under the morning sun. She looked at the man who had protected her, cherished her, and elevated her above the dark world he ruled.

"Yes," she sobbed softly, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Matteo! Absolutely yes!"
Matteo slipped the stunning ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their love forever beneath the warm sunlight streaming through the windows.
