Chapter 7 - The Quiet After the Storm

By three o'clock in the afternoon, the estate was entirely silent once more.
The rain had stopped, leaving behind a cold, crisp sky framed by thin white clouds over Lake Michigan. The four black sedans brought by Adrian’s men had been driven away, the traitors disarmed and secured in the compound's subterranean security holding rooms, awaiting final judgment.
In the second-floor guest suite, Clare sat near the grand window, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs.
She had heard the brief commotion down the hallway hours ago—the muffled shouts, the heavy footsteps of armed men running past her door, the sharp click of tactical gear. Though Marcus had remained stationed outside her room, keeping her safe, the anxiety had kept her on edge for hours.
The lock on her door clicked softly.
Clare turned her head sharply as the door swung open.
Matteo stepped into the room.
He looked tired. His dark hair was rumpled, his tie loosened at his collar, his black suit jacket draped over his arm. But as his eyes found hers, the cold, dangerous edge that had surrounded him all morning melted away completely.
Clare pushed herself out of the chair, ignoring the dull ache in her wrapped ankle, and walked toward him as quickly as she could.
"Matteo," she breathed.
He closed the distance between them in two long strides, catching her in his arms and pulling her flush against his broad chest. He buried his face in her hair, breathing in her soft scent as if drawing life back into his lungs.
Clare wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, holding onto him with everything she had. "Are you okay? Is everyone okay?"
"It is over, Clare," Matteo whispered softly, his large hands resting gently on her back. "The house is clean."
She pulled back slightly to look at his face. "Your cousin... Adrian?"
Matteo’s expression hardened for a fleeting second before softening again. "Adrian was the one who ordered those men to follow you. He was working with our enemies in New York to dismantle this family from within."
Clare gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth. "Your own cousin?"
"Blood means nothing if it lacks loyalty," Matteo said quietly, his thumb gently smoothing over her lower lip. "He used you to test my security. He hurt you to distract me. He will answer for every single choice he made."
Clare looked into his dark eyes, seeing the immense burden he carried on his shoulders—the burden of protecting dozens of lives, of navigating a world where betrayal hid behind every smile.
"What happens now?" she asked softly.
"Now," Matteo murmured, leaning down to kiss her forehead gently, "I take care of you."
He picked her up easily in his arms, ignoring her small gasp of surprise, and carried her back over to the plush velvet chair by the window. He set her down gently, then pulled up a small footstool and sat down right beside her, resting his arms on her knees.
"Dr. Miller says your ankle needs another two days of total rest," Matteo said, offering a small, sweet smile. "Which means you are officially confined to this room, Miss Morgan."
Clare laughed softly, a bright, beautiful sound that lit up the quiet room. "And who will supervise my confinement, Mr. Romano?"
"I will," Matteo replied, taking her hand and pressing his lips to her knuckles. "Personally."
For the rest of the afternoon, the world outside ceased to exist. Matteo stayed in the room, setting aside his phone, his business files, and his worries. They talked about simple things—her childhood in downstate Illinois, her love for old books, his memories of building the lakeside gardens with his mother.

For the first time in three years, Clare saw the man behind the terrifying reputation—a man of deep intelligence, dry humor, and an overwhelming capacity for tenderness.
And as the sun began to set over the lake, painting the snow-dusted grounds in shades of deep orange and gold, Clare realized that her life would never be the same again. She was no longer just the housekeeper who cleaned broken porcelain off the floor. She was the anchor holding the most powerful man in Chicago to his humanity.
