Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage

The contract was signed not with ink, but with silence and compliance.

By seven o'clock that morning, while the rest of the city was waking up to a grey, rainy Sunday, Maya’s life had been completely upturned. A sleek black town car had arrived at her tiny, rundown apartment in the outer borough, picking up her limited personal belongings under the supervision of two imposing men in dark suits.

Her mother was transferred via private medical transport to a state-of-the-art respiratory clinic in the city, placed in a luxurious private suite with round-the-clock specialized care. When Maya had visited her mother that afternoon, Martha looked rested, her pale cheeks already showing a faint hint of color under the care of top-tier physicians.

"He is a dangerous man, Maya," Martha had wheezed softly, gripping her daughter's hand with weak fingers as she lay in the pristine hospital bed. "Silas Sterling does not do charity. Why is he doing this?"

"He said he valued your loyalty, Mom," Maya lied smoothly, kissing her mother's forehead. "He just wants me to work for him directly now. Personal assistant work at the estate. It's an executive role."

It was a half-truth. Maya didn't even know what her role was supposed to be.

That evening, the black car dropped Maya off back at the Sterling estate. But this time, she was not led to the servants' quarters in the basement.

A stern-looking elderly woman named Mrs. Gable, the chief housekeeper who answered only to Silas, led Maya up to the west wing of the mansion. She opened the door to a sprawling suite featuring a king-sized canopy bed, plush velvet furniture, a private balcony facing the ocean, and an adjoining marble bathroom larger than Maya's entire apartment.

On the bed lay three high-end garment bags and several orange Hermes shoe boxes.

"Mr. Sterling requested that you dress for dinner at eight o'clock," Mrs. Gable said crisply, her face an unreadable mask as she handed Maya a brass key. "You are not to leave the west wing until the chime rings."

"Am I... am I a prisoner here?" Maya asked, holding the heavy key in her trembling hand.

Mrs. Gable paused at the door, turning back to look at the young woman. "You are whatever Mr. Sterling decides you are, my dear. I suggest you wear the green dress. He prefers emerald."

Left alone in the massive, quiet suite, Maya felt the weight of her reality pressing down on her chest. She walked over to the bed and unzipped the largest garment bag. Inside was an exquisite emerald green silk gown with a low back and a delicate side slit. Beside it were diamond drop earrings and a pair of black satin heels.

She touched the soft silk, feeling surreal. Only twenty-four hours ago, she was hiding in a freezer eating leftover beef. Now, she was being dressed like a princess in a fortress belonging to the city's most feared crime boss.

She showered in the massive marble stall, washing away the lingering smell of industrial cleaner and diner grease. She dried her long dark hair, letting it fall in soft waves over her shoulders, and put on the silk dress. It fit her like a glove, hugging her slender waist and draping gracefully down to her ankles.

At precisely eight o'clock, a soft chime echoed through the room.

Maya stepped out into the hallway. Standing at the end of the corridor was Silas.

He was dressed in a dark charcoal suit, his shirt crisp and dark, his posture relaxed yet imposing. As Maya approached him, his eyes slowly drifted down the length of her silk-clad body, taking in every detail with an intense, possessive scrutiny that made her blood run hot.

"You look exquisite," Silas said, offering his arm to her.

Maya hesitated for a split second before lightly resting her small hand on his forearm. The muscle beneath his suit jacket was rock solid.

May you like

"Where are we going?" she asked quietly as he led her down the grand staircase.

"To dinner," Silas replied smoothly. "You were hungry last night, Maya. Tonight, you eat like a guest."
