Chapter 8 - The Price of Absolute Loyalty

The kiss was hot, fierce, and tasting of smoke and copper. Maya didn't pull away. She melted into him, her hands sliding up his broad shoulders, wrapping around his neck as she returned the kiss with a desperate intensity that shocked them both.

The boundaries between captor and prisoner, billionaire and waitress, monster and innocent collapsed in the ruined, smoke-filled room.

Silas pulled back slowly, his heavy breath warm against her flushed skin. His dark eyes burned with an intense, terrifying fire—an obsession that had finally broken through its gilded cage.

"They will pay for coming into this house," Silas whispered, his voice a low, lethal vow against her lips. "I will end Nikolai's line tonight."

An hour later, the mansion was secured by dozens of heavily armed reinforcements. The bodies were removed, the smoke cleared, and Maya was moved down to Silas’s private master suite in the east wing—the most heavily fortified bunker in the entire estate.

Silas stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in his walk-in dressing room, peeling off his ruined, bloodied shirt.

Maya stepped into the room holding a damp towel and a bowl of warm water. She quietly walked up behind him, setting the bowl on a marble counter.

"Let me," she said softly.

Silas stopped, watching her reflection in the glass as she dipped the towel into the warm water and gently pressed it against the cuts on his back and shoulders. He remained still, letting her touch him, letting her clean his wounds with a tender, steady hand.

"Nikolai is hiding in an abandoned container terminal at the Port of New York," Silas said quietly, staring at her reflection. "I leave in twenty minutes to finish this."

Maya’s hands paused on his shoulder. "Is there no other way? Let the police handle it. You don't have to keep bleeding."

Silas turned around, facing her. He took the towel from her small hands, setting it aside, and took both her hands in his.

"The police are paid by men like Nikolai and me, Maya," Silas said calmly. "There is no law in my world except strength. If I do not destroy him completely tonight, he will send more men. Next time, they might hit your mother’s hospital. They might strike when I am not there to shield you."

Maya’s chest tightened at the mention of her mother. She realized the brutal truth: her life was now irrevocably bound to his. She couldn't go back to her old life even if she wanted to.

"Promise me you'll come back," Maya whispered, looking up into his eyes, her heart aching with a terrifying vulnerability.

May you like

Silas pulled her close, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet until her eyes were level with his.

"I will always come back to you, little bird," Silas promised, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead. "You are my anchor now."
