Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage Expands

Over the next two weeks, the Sterling estate became both a sanctuary and a prison for Maya.

The war with the Russian mob escalated in the streets of the city, but within the gated, heavily guarded perimeter of the Long Island mansion, an eerie sense of luxury prevailed. Maya was not allowed to leave the grounds without an armed escort, but within the mansion, her freedom slowly expanded.

Silas did not force himself upon her physically. Instead, he engaged in a slow, psychological siege.

He spent every evening with her. They dined together, walked through the massive indoor botanical gardens, and sat in his library while he worked on high-level business deals. He began to share small fragments of his life with her—his harsh upbringing in the syndicate, the betrayal of his father, the brutal sacrifices required to hold the city in an iron grip.

To Maya’s terror, she found herself listening. She found herself seeing the man behind the monster—a brilliant, fiercely protective, yet utterly lonely soul who had built a fortress to keep the world out.

One afternoon, Maya walked into her suite to find a large wooden drafting table set up by the balcony windows, complete with professional design paper, high-end sketch pads, fine charcoal pencils, and bolts of luxurious Italian silks and velvets.

She stood frozen in the middle of the room, tears stinging her eyes.

Silas stepped out from the adjoining dressing room, dressed in a sharp navy suit.

"What is this?" Maya whispered, turning to him.

"You left your dreams behind to save your mother," Silas said, stepping up beside her. He picked up a charcoal pencil and gently slid it into her hand. "I am giving them back to you. I have enrolled you in online courses with Parsons under a private tutor. You will design here."

Maya looked down at the pencil in her hand, then up at him. "Why are you doing this, Silas? Why are you being nice to me?"

Silas reached out, his thumb gently tracing her lower lip. "Because I want you to bloom, Maya. But I want you to bloom only for me."

Before she could process his words, a loud commotion broke out in the courtyard below. Gunfire—sharp, rapid popping sounds—echoed through the thick glass windows, followed by the screeching of tires and the deep boom of an explosion near the front gates.

The war had finally reached the estate.

Silas’s face hardened instantly. He pulled a compact black handgun from his jacket, stepping in front of Maya to shield her body with his own.

"Get into the panic room behind the wardrobe!" Silas barked, his voice filled with unquestioning command. "Now!"

May you like

"Silas, no!" Maya cried out, her hands instinctively grabbing his sleeve. Fear—not for herself, but for him—surged through her chest with shocking intensity.

"Go, Maya!" he roared, shoving her toward the dressing room just as the heavy wooden doors of her suite were blown inward by a breach charge, filling the air with smoke and splintered wood.
