Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Sleep was an impossible luxury for Maya that night.

From the window of her third-floor suite, she watched as black SUVs tore down the long driveway of the estate, their headlights cutting through the heavy coastal fog. Men with tactical rifles and leather jackets moved swiftly across the grounds, establishing an aggressive perimeter. The mansion had transformed from a palace into a fortress preparing for war.

Maya paced back and forth across the thick Persian rug, her heart hammering against her ribs. The dark realization of her situation was settling in. She was safe from poverty, yes. Her mother was getting the best care money could buy. But she was now trapped in the epicenter of a brutal underworld war.

Around three in the morning, the heavy rain outside intensified, thunder rattling the glass balcony doors.

Unable to stay in her room any longer, Maya cautiously opened her suite door and stepped into the quiet corridor. The mansion was dark, illuminated only by low emergency lights along the baseboards.

She tiptoed down the west wing corridor, guided by a strange, instinctual pull toward the sound of hushed, frantic voices coming from the lower level.

She crept down the servants' stairs, hiding behind a marble pillar overlooking the grand foyer.

Below, Silas stood near the main entrance. His dark suit jacket was gone, his white dress shirt stained with fresh splatters of dark blood across his chest and sleeves. Viktor stood beside him, clutching a bleeding arm wrapped in a makeshift tourniquet. Three other men lay on stretcher gurneys near the doorway, being attended to by a private doctor.

"Nikolai thinks he can push into my territory because the syndicate council is weak," Silas was saying, his voice a dangerous, low snarl as he wiped blood from his knuckles with a white cloth. "He thinks because I spared his brother last year, I have grown soft."

"What are your orders, boss?" Viktor grunted through gritted teeth. "Do we hit his warehouse in Queens?"

"No," Silas said, tossing the bloodied cloth onto the marble floor. "We don't hit his warehouse. We wipe out his entire supply chain. Burn the docks. Kill everyone standing in front of his door. I want Nikolai brought to me alive by sunrise."

Maya gasped softly, pulling back behind the pillar.

Despite her silence, Silas’s head snapped toward the upper staircase instantly. His predator instincts were hyper-attuned.

"Who’s there?" Silas barked, his hand instinctively dropping to the heavy black pistol holstered at his waist.

Maya panicked. She turned to run back up the stairs, but her heels clicked loudly against the marble.

"Maya," Silas called out. The anger in his voice faded into a dangerous warning. "Stop walking."

Maya froze. She slowly turned around, looking down at him through the wooden railings of the balcony. She looked small, pale, and terrified, clutching her green silk dress against her chest.

Silas stared up at her. The sight of her—pure, innocent, and unblemished standing above a sea of blood and violence—seemed to trigger something deep within him. He turned to Viktor.

"Get the doctor to clean up the floor," Silas ordered curtly. "Take the men to the infirmary."

Without waiting for a response, Silas walked up the grand staircase, his long strides effortless despite the exhaustion of a bloody skirmish. He reached the balcony, stepping directly into Maya's personal space.

The metallic smell of blood hit her nose, sharp and terrifying.

"I told you to stay in your room," Silas said softly, staring down at her face.

"I... I heard the noise," Maya whispered, backing up until her back hit the hallway wall. "You're hurt."

Silas glanced down at his blood-stained shirt. "It isn't my blood."

He raised a hand, pressing his bloodied knuckles against the wall right beside her ear, effectively trapping her. His face was inches from hers. Maya could see the wild, adrenaline-fueled fire burning in his dark eyes—the high of a king who had just commanded death.

"You shouldn't be down here looking at this, little bird," he murmured, his breath warm against her cheek. "This world will destroy you."

May you like

"Then let me go," Maya pleaded, looking into his eyes. "Send me back to my apartment. I'll work three jobs, I'll pay you back every cent for my mother's care—"

"No," Silas cut her off, his voice absolute. He reached out with his free hand, his long, warm fingers wrapping around her slender throat—not squeezing, but holding her firm, feeling the rapid, frantic pulse fluttering beneath her soft skin. "You don't leave. You are mine now, Maya. The sooner you accept that, the safer you will be."
