Chapter 10 - The True Treasure

Three years later.
The quiet morning mist rolled over the hills of Beverly Hills, catching the early golden rays of the sun as it illuminated the estate.
In the master bedroom, the heavy black-out curtains were drawn back, allowing the soft morning light to flood across the room.
Ryan woke up early, as he always did. But he didn't reach for his smartphone to check stock market tickers or international real estate updates. Instead, he turned his head to look beside him.
Emily was sleeping peacefully, her hair spread across the white silk pillows. Cuddled tightly between them was their fourteen-month-old daughter, Lily, who was sleeping with her tiny thumb tucked into her mouth, her soft breaths making her little embroidered pajama top rise and fall rhythmically.
Ryan smiled, a feeling of profound, overwhelming peace washing over his heart.
Gently, so as not to wake them, Ryan slipped out of bed, pulled on a soft robe, and walked down the grand staircase into the kitchen.
There were no caterers. There was no industrial steam.
Ryan brewed two cups of fresh organic coffee, cooked a pan of simple fluffy scrambled eggs, and toasted fresh sourdough bread that Emily had baked the evening before. He placed the food onto a wooden tray, along with a single red rose picked fresh from Emily’s garden outside.
He carried the tray upstairs, pushing open the bedroom door with his foot.
Emily was sitting up in bed, propped up by pillows, softly humming a lullaby as she tickled little Lily’s tummy, causing the toddler to burst into quiet, musical giggles.
She looked up as Ryan walked in, her brown eyes shining with deep, unconditional affection.
"Morning, chef," Emily smiled, pulling the bedcovers back so he could set the tray down.
"Morning, beautiful," Ryan said, sitting on the edge of the mattress and handing her a cup of hot coffee.
Lily reached out her tiny hands, babbling happily and trying to grab the red rose on the tray. Ryan picked up his daughter, lifting her high into the air as she giggled wildly, before settling her safely on his lap.
He reached into his robe pocket and pulled out the small velvet box—the same box he had carried four years ago when he had walked into the outdoor kitchen and found her scrubbing dirty pots. He opened it, revealing the sapphire necklace resting on the black velvet.
Emily looked at the glittering stones, then looked up into Ryan’s eyes with a gentle, questioning smile. "Ryan... what is this for? It’s not our anniversary."
"It doesn't need to be an anniversary," Ryan said softly. He reached behind her neck, fastening the platinum clasp as the sapphires rested against her throat. "Every day I wake up in this house with you and our daughter is a celebration. Four years ago, I came home trying to surprise you with wealth, thinking that was what you needed from me. But you showed me that true wealth isn't built in bank accounts or luxury estates."
He took her soft, healed hand into his own, pressing his lips against her knuckles.

"True wealth," Ryan whispered, looking into the eyes of the woman who had loved him when he had nothing, "is standing beside the person who holds your heart, no matter how bright or dark the world outside becomes."
Emily smiled, her eyes glistening with happy tears. She leaned forward, pressing her lips against his, while little Lily clapped her tiny hands between them, her innocent laughter filling the sunlit room of the home they had finally reclaimed.
