Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

A year after the trial, the Beverly Hills mansion had completely shed its former atmosphere of cold, ostentatious greed.
The long, pretentious dining hall that had once hosted parasitic socialites had been redesigned into a warm, light-filled family gathering space featuring natural oak wood, indoor plants, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that opened directly onto lush green gardens.
Emily had officially launched her own venture: The Vance Foundation for Domestic Healing—a non-profit organization funded by Ryan’s corporate entity that provided legal defense, safe housing, and career retraining for victims of domestic financial abuse and coercive control. Her work had already helped hundreds of women across Southern California escape abusive living situations and reclaim their independence.
Ryan had stepped back from day-to-day international operations, promoting Marcus to Chief Executive Officer of the international hospitality division, while Ryan retained his position as Chairman of the Board. He now worked four days a week from his home office, ensuring he was present for every breakfast and dinner with Emily.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in May, the backyard of the estate was filled with the sound of laughter, acoustic guitar music, and the delicious scent of grilled vegetables and fresh seafood.
It wasn't a party for Hollywood influencers or high-society movers and shakers. It was a gathering for real friends: Emily’s father, whose health had completely recovered thanks to top-tier medical care; the local community organizers Emily worked with; and several of the house staff members and their families, who were treated as honored guests rather than servants.
Ryan stood near the outdoor grill, wearing a simple linen shirt and aprons, flipping fresh salmon fillets while laughing with Emily’s father.
Emily walked up behind him, carrying a pitcher of fresh iced tea. She looked radiant, her skin glowing with health and happiness, her laughter ringing out across the sunny patio.
"Look at you," Emily teased, leaning in to kiss his shoulder. "The billionaire restaurant mogul, working the grill at his own backyard barbecue."
Ryan chuckled, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close. "I told you years ago, Emily... I’m just a cook at heart. All the money and luxury real estate in the world don't mean a thing if you don't have the right person sitting across the table from you."

Emily rested her head against his chest, looking out over the garden where her father was playing chess with one of the foundation directors. "We built something real this time, Ryan. No lies. No parasites. Just love."
"Just love," Ryan agreed, tightening his hold around her.
