Chapter 4 - The Midnight Eviction

The night dragged on, but there was no sleep inside the mansion. The silent halls echoed with the sound of drawers slamming, heavy luggage being dragged down marble staircases, and muffled sobbing.
Ryan sat in the master bedroom, sitting on the edge of the plush king-sized bed. Emily lay beside him, her head resting on his lap. He gently ran his fingers through her clean, dry hair, feeling her body gradually relax for the first time in years.
"You don't have to be so cruel to them, Ryan," Emily whispered softly, looking up at the high decorative ceiling. "They are your family. I... I can handle it. I’m just glad you’re home."
Ryan stopped his hand, looking down at her with intense tenderness. "Emily, look at me."
She looked into his eyes.
"They didn't just disrespect you, Emily. They abused you," Ryan said, his voice firm and unwavering. "They saw your kindness as weakness. If I had stayed away for another year, what would they have done to you? They took your freedom, your dignity, and your voice. Being my family does not give them an immunity pass to destroy the person I love most in this world. They are getting off easy by avoiding prison."
Downstairs, the front doors swung open.
Ryan walked out onto the second-floor balcony, watching as private security guards escorted Linda, Rachel, and Ethan toward a fleet of basic rideshare cars waiting in the circular driveway.
Ethan was furiously arguing with one of the guards, trying to carry a massive leather duffel bag stuffed with expensive designer coats.
"That bag remains here, Mr. Vance," the security guard said firmly, unzipping the bag and pulling out several fur coats and high-end watches. "Mr. Ryan Vance’s orders were explicit: personal clothing only. No luxury items purchased with corporate funds within the last forty-eight months."
"This is ridiculous!" Rachel cried, sitting on top of her small suitcase on the driveway, her mascara running down her cheeks in dark streaks. "Ryan! You’re a monster! You’re choosing a nobody over your own family!"
Ryan leaned over the marble balcony railing, his voice echoing through the cool night air. "I didn't choose a nobody, Rachel. I chose the only person who stayed loyal to me when I was a nobody. Goodbye."
The security guards closed the doors of the rideshare vehicles, and one by one, the red taillights faded down the long, winding driveway of the estate, disappearing through the heavy iron gates.
When the gates finally clicked shut, a profound, heavy quiet settled over the Beverly Hills property.
Ryan walked back inside the master suite. He pulled the velvet jewelry box from his pocket, opened it, and lifted the thirty-carat diamond necklace into the light. He walked over to Emily, who was standing near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city lights of Los Angeles.
Gently, he draped the glittering chain around her neck, securing the clasp behind her hair. The diamonds rested against her simple linen robe, catching the golden light of the bedroom lamps.
Emily looked down at her chest, her fingers hovering over the cold, sparkling stones. "It’s... it’s too much, Ryan. I don't need diamonds."
May you like
"You don't need them," Ryan whispered, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and resting his chin on her shoulder. "But you deserve them. You deserve everything this world has to offer, and I am going to spend the rest of my life making sure no one ever makes you feel small again."
Emily turned around in his arms, resting her face against his chest, and for the first time in five years, she let out a long, peaceful breath and fell asleep in the arms of the man who had built an empire just to bring her home.
