Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Empire of Sand

The fallout from the press conference was swift, brutal, and historic.
Within hours of the live broadcast, the raw security footage went viral across the globe, racking up over fifty million views on social media platforms. Public sentiment reversed instantly. The tabloid show that had interviewed Linda and Rachel issued a humiliating public apology on national television, firing the executive producer responsible for the segment and settling Ryan’s defamation lawsuit out of court for an undisclosed multi-million-dollar sum.
The socialites who had attended Ethan’s lavish dinner parties publicly distanced themselves, deleting all social media photos with the Vance family.
Three days after the press conference, Ryan sat in his home study with Marcus, reviewing the legal filings from the District Attorney's office.
"The grand jury returned a full indictment this morning," Marcus reported, sliding a set of legal notices across the desk. "Linda, Rachel, and Ethan have all been formally charged with felony grand theft, wire fraud, and corporate embezzlement. The police executed arrest warrants at their temporary rental apartments two hours ago."
Ryan looked at the mugshots attached to the police reports.
Linda looked broken, her styled hair replaced by disheveled locks, her face haggard and streaked with tears as she stood against the height chart in a county jail processing room. Ethan looked terrified, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered. Rachel’s face was frozen in a look of bitter, hopeless shock.
"Are they being held on bail?" Ryan asked flatly.
"The judge set bail at two million dollars each, given the flight risk and the magnitude of the financial fraud," Marcus replied. "They tried to call your personal cell phone twelve times from the central processing facility, Ryan. They don't have the money to pay the bail bondsman."
"Let them stay there," Ryan said, closing the folder. "They made their bed. Now they can sleep in a county jail cell while their lawyers prepare for trial."
Just then, the study door pushed open softly, and Emily walked in carrying two mugs of warm cider. She looked vibrant, her eyes bright and full of life, completely removed from the shadow of the woman who had been trapped in the service kitchen weeks prior.
"Marcus," Emily smiled warmly, setting a mug on the desk. "Thank you for everything you’ve done for us."
"It’s my duty and honor, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, bowing respectfully before picking up his briefcase. "I’ll leave you two alone. I have to finalize the asset seizure documents for Rachel’s luxury cars."
When Marcus left, Emily walked behind Ryan’s chair, wrapping her arms loosely around his neck and leaning down to rest her cheek against his.
"How are you feeling?" she asked gently.
"I’m feeling like a weight that I’ve been carrying for five years has finally been lifted off my back," Ryan said, turning his head to press a kiss against her cheek. "I built all of this for us, Emily. But I lost sight of what was happening at home while I was chasing success out in the world."

"You were protecting our future," Emily said softy. "You didn't know they were snakes. But you came back when it mattered most."
Ryan pulled her into his lap, holding her close against his chest. "We are starting fresh, Emily. No more long-term overseas trips without you. No more trusting people just because we share the same bloodline. From now on, my empire is right here, in this house, with you."
