Chapter 6 - THE MIDNIGHT TRAP

The night of the planned escape arrived under a thick, suffocating blanket of rain and fog. The clock on the mansion's central tower chimed eleven times, signaling one hour before the boat was scheduled to depart from the south harbor.
Inside the nursery, Clara carefully wrapped a heavy woolen blanket around a small bundle resting in her arms. From a distance, it looked precisely like an infant wrapped up for a cold journey.
Adrian stood near the shadowy corner of the room, adjusting a small concealed microphone hidden beneath Clara’s coat collar.
"Are you certain you want to do this, Clara?" Adrian asked, his hands lingering near her shoulders for a second longer than necessary. "Once you walk out those doors, you will be in the middle of a crossfire. My men will be watching, but things can turn violent in a second."
Clara looked up into his striking blue eyes. Over the past twenty-four hours, working closely with Adrian to plan this trap, she had seen a side of him that few people ever witnessed: a fiercely protective father who would burn the world to keep his son safe.
"Noah is safe in the hidden panic room downstairs with Dr. Brooks," Clara said, her voice firm. "That is all that matters to me. Let's finish this."
Adrian nodded, a look of profound respect in his eyes. "Be careful, Clara."
Clara took a deep breath, clutched the blanketed bundle tightly to her chest, and walked out of the nursery. She moved through the dark, quiet corridors of the mansion, heading toward the rear service entrance where a black SUV was waiting in the shadows.
As she stepped out into the cold night rain, a figure materialized from the darkness of the tree line. It was Marcus, wearing a long raincoat, his hand resting on the weapon at his belt.
"You made it," Marcus said, stepping forward, his eyes scanning the quiet courtyard. "Is the baby with you?"
"Yes," Clara said, holding the bundle closer to protect it from the rain. "Where is the car?"
"Right here," Marcus said, gesturing toward the idling SUV. "Get in. We need to move before Adrian realizes you're gone."
Clara walked toward the vehicle, but as she reached the door, she stopped and turned back to Marcus. "Where are we really going, Marcus?"
Marcus paused, his expression shifting in the dim light of the driveway. "What do you mean? I told you, we're taking the boat out of the country."
"You're not taking me anywhere," Clara said calmly, her voice echoing clearly through the small microphone hidden on her collar. "You never intended to let me leave. You killed my brother Julian, and you were planning to kill me as soon as we reached the docks, weren't you?"
Marcus’s face twisted into a sneer. He reached into his coat and pulled out a silenced pistol, pointing it directly at Clara's chest.
"You're smarter than you look, little maid," Marcus spat bitterly. "Your brother was a greedy fool who couldn't keep his mouth shut. Elena Vale wanted out, and the Moretti family was more than happy to help her... for a price. But Adrian ruined everything by surviving their hit. Now, with Adrian’s heir dead or missing, the Vale empire will crumble, and the Morettis will take everything."
"And what about Noah?" Clara asked, keeping her composure despite the gun pointed at her heart. "He's just an innocent baby."
"He's an obstacle," Marcus said coldly, taking a step closer. "Now give me the child, Clara, or I'll shoot you right here."
"I don't think so, Marcus," a deep, chilling voice echoed from the shadows behind him.
Marcus spun around, but before he could raise his weapon, bright headlights illuminated the entire driveway, blinding him. Multiple armed vehicles surrounded the courtyard, trapping Marcus in a blinding circle of light.
Adrian stepped out from the lead vehicle, holding a heavy tactical handgun aimed directly at Marcus's head.
"Drop the weapon, Marcus," Adrian commanded, his voice dark with lethal intent. "It's over."
Marcus panicked. Realizing he was completely surrounded, he lunged toward Clara, intending to use her as a human shield.
Clara reacted instinctively. She threw the heavy bundle directly into Marcus’s face, catching him off guard. As Marcus stumbled backward, trying to push the heavy blankets away, a single shot echoed through the rain.
The bullet struck Marcus in the shoulder, knocking him to the muddy ground. His gun skittered across the wet pavement.
Within seconds, Adrian’s loyal security team swarmed the area, pinning Marcus to the ground and disarming him completely.
Adrian rushed forward, grabbing Clara by her waist and pulling her safely behind his protective frame.
"Are you hurt?" Adrian asked urgently, his eyes searching her face for any sign of injury.
"I'm fine," Clara panted, her heart racing as she looked down at the empty bundle of clothes scattered on the ground. "Is... is it over?"
May you like
Adrian looked down at Marcus, who was being hauled to his feet by two guards, bleeding and defeated.
"For Marcus, it's over," Adrian said grimly. "But the people who paid him are still out there."
