Chapter 2 - Sanctuary in the Shadows

I woke up to the rhythmic, hypnotic Beep-Beep-Beep of medical monitors. The air smelled of sharp antiseptic and clean linen. For a terrifying second, I thought I was still on the bus, but as my vision cleared, I realized I was in a spacious, private hospital room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the East River.

A gentle knock sounded at the door, and a woman in surgical scrubs stepped inside, followed by Julian Vance.

"Mrs. Mercer," the doctor said warmly. "I’m Dr. Aris Thorne. You gave us quite a scare last night, but thanks to Mr. Vance’s quick thinking, we managed to halt your premature labor with aggressive magnesium treatments and bed rest. Your triplets are still inside, safe and sound."

I let out a ragged sob of pure relief, placing both hands over my swollen stomach. "They're okay? All three of them?"

"They are," Dr. Thorne confirmed, smiling softly. "However, your body is under extreme stress. You must remain on total bed rest until we reach at least thirty-four weeks. Any sudden emotional or physical trauma could trigger labor again."

After the doctor left, Julian stepped closer to the bedside. He was dressed in a tailored navy suit now, looking every bit the formidable billionaire venture capitalist I would later learn he was. He pulled up a chair and sat down.

"Your husband is a foolish man, Claire," Julian said quietly.

"How do you know Ethan?" I asked, my voice hoarse.

Julian folded his hands in his lap. "Ethan Mercer’s firm, Mercer Capital, has been trying to secure a hundred-million-dollar buyout from my firm, Vance Holdings, for the past six months. Ethan thinks he’s a financial genius, but he’s reckless. He’s been funneling corporate funds into his personal accounts to support his lavish lifestyle with Sabrina Vale."

My breath hitched. "Sabrina..."

"Yesterday, Ethan attempted to freeze your joint accounts to force you into a predatory divorce settlement," Julian continued, his voice hardening like steel. "He wanted you destitute, hopeless, and quietly hidden away before he announced his new public romance with Vale in Los Angeles. He thought you were weak."

"I was weak," I admitted, looking down at my hands. "I had twenty-three dollars to my name last night."

"You are not weak," Julian countered fiercely. "You survived hours of terror to protect your children. Ethan underestimated you because he measures worth in bank balances and press releases. He doesn't know that my legal team has been auditing his firm for three weeks. I know every illegal transfer he’s made."

Julian reached into his briefcase and pulled out a leather folder. "I’m offering you a deal, Claire. Stay in this private wing under an assumed name. My team will cover every single medical bill, provide you with top-tier security, and prepare the ultimate legal defense. In return, when the time is right, you help me dismantle Mercer Capital."

"Why help me?" I asked, looking into his steady gray eyes.

"Because four years ago, Ethan Mercer ruined my sister’s life using the exact same legal tricks," Julian revealed, a shadow passing over his features. "He thinks he can throw women away like trash when he’s finished with them. I vowed I would never let him destroy another family. So, Claire... will you fight back?"

I looked at the ultrasound picture resting on the bedside table—the three tiny silhouettes fighting to exist. My fear vanished, replaced by an icy, unwavering resolve.

"Tell me what to do," I said.
