Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The room parted like the Red Sea as Julian led me down the stairs into the center of the ballroom. Photographers instantly turned their lenses away from the Hollywood actress and focused entirely on the striking woman on the arm of New York’s most elusive billionaire.

Ethan stood frozen, his eyes wide with absolute horror and disbelief.

I walked directly toward him, the soft whisper of my silk gown echoing in the silence of the room. When I stopped ten feet in front of him, I saw the color completely drain from his face.

"Claire?" Ethan whispered again, stepping forward foolishly. "What... what are you doing here? How are you—"

"Mrs. Mercer," Julian Vance interjected loudly, his voice echoing across the ballroom so that every powerful figure in Manhattan could hear. "Or rather, Claire. Allow me to publicly welcome you as the new Majority Shareholder and Managing Partner of Vance-Mercer Asset Management."

Gasps erupted throughout the crowd.

Sabrina Vale looked frantically between Ethan and me. "Ethan, what is he talking about? Who is this woman?"

"Shut up, Sabrina!" Ethan hissed, his cool composure shattering into panic. He took another step toward me, his voice desperate. "Claire, what game are you playing? You vanished! You were supposed to be in upstate New York! Where... where are the—"

"Where are our children?" I asked softly, my voice cutting through the room like a silver blade. "The three babies you told me to abandon? The triplets you left destitute while freezing my bank accounts on a rainy Tuesday night?"

Whispers exploded through the high-society crowd. People began pulling out their phones, recording every second.

"Triplet babies?" an editor from the Wall Street Journal murmured loudly. "Mercer abandoned his pregnant wife with triplets?"

"Claire, stop it!" Ethan stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "You're delusional! You're making a scene! Martin, call security!"

"Security isn't going to help you tonight, Ethan," Victoria Sterling’s sharp voice sounded from behind us. She stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from a leather portfolio and handing them directly to two waiting Federal Marshals who had quietly entered the ballroom.

"Ethan Mercer," Victoria announced coldly. "You are hereby served with a formal complaint for felony fraud, corporate embezzlement, perjury, and illegal asset liquidation. Furthermore, a temporary restraining order and immediate freeze of all your personal and corporate assets has been issued by the Supreme Court of the State of New York."

"This is ridiculous!" Ethan yelled, turning to Martin. "Martin, tell them!"

Martin Keller took two steps back, putting his hands up defensively. "I... I had no knowledge of the corporate transfer fraud, Ethan. I represent myself."

"You coward!" Ethan roared. He turned back to me, his eyes bloodshot, trembling with a pathetic mixture of anger and humiliation. "You did this to me? You destroyed my career for revenge?!"
