Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Fifth Avenue

For the next ten weeks, the world believed Claire Mercer had simply vanished off the face of the earth.

Ethan had returned to our Fifth Avenue apartment two days after tossing the divorce papers at me, expecting to find me gone. When he saw my unpacked clothes in the closet and the apartment empty, he assumed I had crawled back to my small hometown in upstate New York in disgrace. Relieved to be rid of his pregnant baggage, Ethan promptly boarded a private jet to Los Angeles, threw lavish parties with Sabrina Vale, and bragged to the tabloids about his upcoming bachelorhood.

Meanwhile, behind the heavily guarded doors of the private wing at Presbyterian Hospital, I was fighting a very different battle.

With Julian’s help, I hired Victoria Sterling, Manhattan’s most ruthless high-stakes divorce attorney. Victoria spent hours sitting at my bedside, going over Ethan’s financial filings, tax returns, and offshore holdings.

"Ethan made a fatal error, Claire," Victoria explained one afternoon, holding up a thick stack of bank statements. "When he froze your personal accounts, he used a corporate emergency freeze order reserved for executive fraud. He swore under oath that you were stealing company assets to justify locking you out."

"That’s perjury," I said, leaning back against my pillows.

"It’s felony perjury," Victoria corrected with a cold smile. "And because he did it while you were high-risk pregnant, any judge in the state of New York will strip him of his executive immunity. He didn't just break the marriage contract; he committed financial warfare."

While the legal trap was being set, my body was slowly healing and growing. Week after week crawled by. Julian visited every evening after market close. He brought books, healthy meals, and legal updates, but mostly, he brought friendship. He sat with me while I listened to the baby monitors, his presence a grounding force amidst the storm of my life.

I learned that Julian wasn't just a ruthless businessman; he was a man who had built his empire from nothing after his family was cheated out of their legacy. He saw in me a resilience I hadn't known I possessed.

At thirty-four weeks, my time arrived.

On a quiet Tuesday night, under the care of Dr. Thorne and a team of twelve specialists, I gave birth via scheduled C-section to three healthy, beautiful babies: two boys and a girl. Alexander, Benjamin, and Charlotte.

When the nurses placed the three swaddled bundles into my arms, tears streamed down my face. They were small, but they were breathing on their own, their tiny hands clutching my fingers with fierce strength.

Julian stood in the doorway, watching quietly. I looked up at him, my heart overflowing with emotions I could barely name.

"They have your strength," Julian whispered, stepping into the room and staring down at the babies with genuine awe.

"They have a future," I corrected him softly. "Thanks to you."

"Now," Julian said, his eyes darkening with a sharp, lethal brightness, "it’s time we ensure their father pays for trying to take that future away."
