Chapter 6 - The Weight of Gold

The night of the gala arrived. The Plaza Hotel was bathed in shimmering gold lights, red carpets stretching from the street into the grand marble foyer. Photographers’ flashes blindingly lit up the rainy Manhattan night as limousines dropped off billionaires, politicians, and celebrities.

Ethan Mercer stepped out of a black town car, wearing a pristine Tom Ford tuxedo. Beside him, Sabrina Vale sparkled in a daring emerald green gown, dripping in diamond necklaces that Ethan had purchased using funds from their supposedly locked joint accounts.

Ethan strutted up the steps, nodding arrogantly at the cameras. He felt at the absolute pinnacle of human success. In his breast pocket rested the draft contract for the Vance Holdings merger—a deal that would make him personally worth over two hundred million dollars.

"Are you sure Vance will sign tonight, darling?" Sabrina purred, wrapping her manicured arm tight around Ethan’s sleeve.

"Julian Vance is a businessman, Sabrina," Ethan boasted smugly as they entered the grand ballroom, where hundreds of high-society guests were mingling under massive crystal chandeliers. "He knows Mercer Capital dominates the mid-market. He needs us as much as we need him. Tonight, we secure the future."

Across the room, Ethan’s lawyer, Martin Keller, hurried over, looking slightly pale.

"Ethan," Martin whispered nervously, clutching his phone. "Did you check your primary banking app on the way over?"

Ethan frowned, waving his hand dismissively. "Of course not. I’m at the biggest event of the year. Why?"

"I tried to process the retainer payment for the appellate team ten minutes ago, and it was declined," Martin muttered, sweating under his collar. "Both corporate and personal lines are showing a red flag status."

Ethan scoffed loudly. "It’s a bank glitch, Martin. Calm down. The merger happens tonight. Once Vance’s capital clears, a minor technical error won't matter."

Suddenly, the massive brass doors at the head of the ballroom swung open. The room fell into a sudden, stunned hush. The hum of conversation died down completely as all eyes turned toward the grand staircase.

Julian Vance had arrived.

He looked imposing and impossibly handsome in a custom dark tuxedo. But it wasn't Julian who caused the room to hold its collective breath.

It was the woman walking beside him, her hand resting gracefully on his arm.

She wore an exquisite floor-length silk gown of deep navy blue. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant vintage style, revealing a diamond necklace that outshone everything in the room. Her posture was regal, her eyes glowing with absolute confidence and cold power.

Ethan stared across the ballroom, his glass of champagne slipping from his fingers and shattering against the marble floor.

His breath caught in his throat.

"Claire?" Ethan choked out, his voice cracking. "No... that’s impossible."
