Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Queen

One year later.

The autumn sun set over the Chicago skyline, casting a warm golden glow across the floor-to-ceiling windows of my rooftop terrace.

The penthouse was completely transformed. The cold, lifeless decor Ethan had preferred was gone, replaced by rich hardwood floors, vibrant oil paintings, and plush velvet furniture.

Downstairs in the Apex Development Tower, our new low-income housing initiative—named the Richard Carter Memorial Foundation—had just broken ground, providing four hundred affordable homes for working-class families across the city.

I stood on the terrace, a crystal glass of sparkling water in my hand, looking out at the city my father had helped build.

"Miss Carter?" Marcus Vance stepped out onto the terrace, holding a leather folder.

"Yes, Marcus?" I turned, smiling warmly at the man who had been my rock through the storm.

"The final annulment papers arrived from the state supreme court today," Marcus said, handing me the document. "Your marriage to Ethan Vance has been legally expunged from the public records. As far as the law is concerned, it never happened."

I took the paper, looked down at the bold red stamp reading ANNULLED, and felt a profound, beautiful sense of peace wash over me.

"Thank you, Marcus," I said softly.

"What will you do now, Emma?" Marcus asked gently. "The company is stronger than ever, the foundation is thriving... but what about you?"

I walked to the edge of the glass railing, feeling the cool autumn breeze sweep through my hair.

For two years, I had hidden who I was because I was afraid people would only love my money. I had let myself be tricked by sweet words and neighborhood flowers because I was desperate for a quiet, simple life.

But I wasn't just a quiet girl looking for love anymore. I was the architect of my own destiny.

"I'm going to keep building, Marcus," I said, looking out at the glittering lights of Michigan Avenue. "I'm going to build homes for people who deserve them, protect the legacy my father left me, and live every single day without fear."

My phone buzzed on the terrace table.

It was a notification from my personal assistant, listing the schedule for tomorrow's executive board meeting.

I picked up the phone, tapped the screen, and walked back inside my beautiful, secure, untouchable home—the queen of my own skyline, unbound, unbroken, and forever free.
